If we change our reservation from one ship to another ship will we lose our down payment?  Final payment not due until October.

As long as you keep the same reservation number and are simply moving an existing cruise to a new date, you won't lose your deposit, but depending on how you booked, you may be charged a "change" fee of $100/pp.

If you booked a refundable deposit there is no charge to move to another sailing.

If you booked a non refundable deposit there will be a $100pp change fee that is payable when you move the booking

We would be changing ships from Oasis class to Voyager class

The ship and/or date you switch to makes no difference as long as you keep the same booking number - we do this all the time. We switched a 7-night December 2022 Harmony to an 8-night December 2022 Jewel, and switched a July 2023 B3B (5-8-8 night combo) on Mariner to 7-7-7-night B3B combo on Wonder with no difficulty (other than the annoying change fees).

The one thing you want to avoid at all costs is to let anyone try to convince you that you have to cancel the original cruise and then rebook the second one in order to make the switch. That will be a costly false choice.

That wouldn't make any difference unless they booked after June 1 when the NRD rules changed

On June 1 the nrd rules changed back to the old pre shutdown nrd rules, and it was a false choice back then as well. Getting a semi usable fcc for the nrd stub is not the same as moving those $$ directly to a new date. That’s the false choice.

The old rules were in effect for any bookings made outside of CWC which included all bookings made after March 31, 2022 or that sailed after Sept 30, 2022

On June 1 the NRD changed and FCC are no longer issued if the booking is cancelled.  If the booking is cancelled then 100% of the deposit is held as a penalty

In your original post that I quoted you stated there was a difference if you cancelled vs moved their reservation.

For bookings made before June 1 there is no financial difference if you move vs cancel.

 - if you move a booking you pay a $100 pp change fee and the rest of the money gets applied to the new booking

 - if you cancelled the booking you would be assessed a $100pp change fee and the rest of the money would be issued as an FCC which could be applied to the new booking.

For bookings made after June 1 then yes always make sure to move the booking to a new sailing vs cancelling

And any Cruise Planner purchases get refunded even if the booking number stays the same.  OBC may or may not move depending on terms.  Clarify this when you make the new booking.

Thanks for clarifying. All of these changes and permutations are making my head hurt. Bottom line is that if you want to protect any part of your investment and want  to a move a booking it was always better to move vs cancel and rebook. In the old days it could take more than a month to have an FCC show up, and by then you already had a new deposit down on that rebooked cruise.
