Carnival Gift Cards on Australia Cruises

Does anyone know if Carnival gift cards (which are sold and denominated in US Dollars) can be used for onboard spending on cruises out of Australia where, I believe, the sail and sign account is denominated in Australian dollars?

I just made reservations for an Australia cruise with a PVP.  He asked for the deposit and I told him I wanted to pay with a US gift card. He said he couldn't do that for an Australia cruise so I didn't.

Am on the Splendor now and was told last night I could not use Carnival Gift cards on cruises in Australia.
