Dining room dress for children

"Can" is such a loaded word.

Carnival dress guidelines say no shorts or t-shirts in the dining room. They also say the guidelines apply to children as well.

But like I said, "Can" is such a loaded word.

Ditto on the khaki pants instead of shorts. There are many styles so you should be able to find something that your DS will even wear when he gets home! They don't have to be grandpa pants.

Of course, you will see shorts any way. Our son really enjoyed getting dressed a bit for dinner - it made it seem like something special instead of just dinner at home.

If you can subtly let him know that the teenaged girls on board are going to dig him getting dressed, you'll be golden!

Shorts are OK for breakfast or lunch in the dining room.

Golf shirts are fine.

We just returned from the Triumph and the tan khakis and blue dress shirt and tie was the "uniform" of most teenage and younger boys on the formal nights. There must have been 25 in our seating alone (including my son) It was kinda funny to see them all alike. As for the non formal nights, khakis and a golf shirt were fine.

What about jeans?

JOKE, JOKE, JOKE, Just kidding, coffee has me wired this morning!!!!

I was waiting to see that :)

I have to agree with all the other responses. Personally, I would not let my son wear shorts (even nice ones) in the Main Dining Room. At first my kids balked at the idea of dressing for dinner but once they cruised they totally "got it" and now they love selecting what to pack for dinner

My 8-year-old has not mastered sitting like a lady in a shorter skirt so I buy "skorts" that look like a short skirt from outside but have shorts underneath. Would those be considered appropriate for dinner with a nice blouse or shirt or do you think they are more like shorts?

IMHO, I think skorts are acceptable. As long as they are the kind that look like a skirt. Not the ones that are a skirt in front and shorts in back. Like you said, throw on a nice blouse and some dress shoes and voila! Dressy little lady! :)

I agree. There are many, many skirts not that come with shorts underneath, instead of the skirt front/shorts back of a skort.

I think that'd be fine. I don't personally like the kind that looks like shorts from the back, but the kind with shorts underneath, nobody can even tell that there are shorts underneath. Plus, they're good if you want to wear a short skirt but don't feel totally comfortable.

I'd say khaki pants instead of shorts on casual nights though. Seems to me like a more respectable outfit for the atmosphere.

Past cruisers! Can a young teenage boy wears nice kahki shorts and a golf shirt to dinner on evenings other than captains dinner?

Husband says No!

Listen to your husband...he is right. Shorts are a no-no in the dining room, even for kids. Let them dress up...who knows, you might start something that becomes a fashion trend for your kid when he goes back to school.

My 2 and 5 year olds always wear nice khaki shorts and polo shirts to dinner. But given their short legs and the way kids wear shorts these day, they kinda look like long pants anyway!

I usually freeze in the dining room. Don't their legs get cold?

2 and 5 is a far distance from a young teenager of the OP. Anyone 12 or older ought to be able to dress like an adult when the rules call for it.

But the policy is "no shorts" and the dress requirement is the same for children. If they are going to have polo shirts already, they can just bring a pair of khaki pants.

Oh, I agree. We'll dress kids up for Easter, Christmas photos, and who knows what else. Why not plan for 2 nights on a cruise for it to be a dress-up evening? Our 6-year old, who hates ties and long pants, thought it was the big deal of the week to go to formal night when we ALL dressed up.

I guess it all depends upon how you approach it. If mom and dad are going in tank tops and flip flops, then what can you expect from the kids? We were on a RCCL cruise several years ago when, on one of the formal nights, two older teenage girls came into the dining room late and sat down with their family. They were wearing bathing suits with cover-ups. The head waiter immediately came to the table and asked that they leave. There was much fussing at the table about "this is my cruise and I'll dress as I want" with a fair amount of profanity thrown in. But he insisted and escorted them out, to the applause of just about every table within earshot. And you know, they came dressed appropriately the rest of the week!

Learning to do what is right and appropriate does not stop at the gangplank. Vacations on a ship can be a great learning experience for kids about how to obey and behave, if parents would avail themselves of the opportunity.

Well, since you asked.... :p honestly, I pack as little as possible and the shorts can be used for day or night as far as I am concerned. Have enough to worry about with 2 little ones, let alone making sure they have enough "long" pants for 7 dinners. (Heck, most of the time they stay in the room with the nanny cuz they are pretty wild at that age at the table. They would rather play in the room)

I would find it quite disturbing if anyone would honestly care if my 2 boys nice khaki shorts come down just below their knees, or at their ankles.

We are taking about a 3 inch difference on their short little legs. :) not worth it to change their pants or bring "long"er pants

you guys crack me up ;)
