A very good list. Most have a lot of uneccesary items, yours pretty much sticks to the basics.

There is one that is floating around (has been for years), something like calgon, that I took off over 75 items before I even got out of the carry on bag! There were actually very few items I took off of yours.

We have eliminated (because of non use):

walkie talkies

games

any electronic entertainment (unless our kids pack these for themselves, then they get to carry it)

travel books

cell phone charger (keep it turned off except for brief use)

laptop computer

pillows (I have to have some reason to want to return home :) )

laundry detergent (I use the shower gel or shampoo they have, or send it to the laundry)

beach towels

beach chairs

duct tape

lanyard

lint brush

travel alarm clock

ponchos (too hot!)

collapsable cooler (unless it's packed with toiletries as a carry on)

beach toys

address book (friends and relatives know better than to expect a post card from us)

post it notes

highlighter pen

power strip

extension cord

nightlight

bungee cord

I'm not saying everyone should take these items off the list, I'm saying that we, personally, have packed like this before and brought all this stuff home unopened and unused. Whatever is on this particular list that you don't have a need for, just take it off. If you have to ask what an item is for, you more than likely don't need it.

You have to remember that your needs will be different from the next persons. What also sounds like a lot really isn't, since every little thing is mentioned and much of the must haves general list is pretty much in your purse everyday already (although most of us don't have travel docs and passports with us!

It's a good idea to take a list like this (especially the things to do before leaving home, excellent list here :) ) and customize it for yourself on a spreadsheet program. I have done that and just have to get in and tweak it for each individual trip.

We like to pack as unencumbered as possible, so for us we just deal with missing items that could be very important to another person. We rarely have had instances where we need something like duct tape, but we've spent a whole vacation afternoon looking for cough syrup.

Thank you ryzmom, for posting your list.

Your welcome Kathy!

I agree also that some things on the list I DO NOT USE also! I mostly did this list for the most part of the people that cruise alot and require the necessary things that are on the list and for people/families with kids/children. I took most of the things off of the thread that what you wouldn't leave home without or what did you forget that you wished you had brought and then added my own stuff!

The stuff like Beach towels, toys, chairs and cooler are things that I would take on a vacation if I was driving to the beach or something not necessarily a cruise.

I would take these things on a cruise but only because they are recommended by other cruise goers or professionals:

power strip

extension cord

nightlight

bungee cord

duct tape

lanyard

Thanks for your input Kathy. It's very much appreciated and I hope someone on here that's new to cruising can benefit from this list as much as I will.

Have a great day!

Deana

ryzmom, Your comment on packing because other cruisers or professionals recommend is exactly what I'm referring to (why you need to leave some items at home).

You only need extension cords or power strips if you have excessive electrical items that need charging, otherwise, what is already there is enough.

Bungee cords are used to prop open balcony doors, you can do that with a chair, most newer ships, the doors now stay open on their own.

There is actually enough light to see at night from the crack under the hallway door, the nightlights cannot be plugged into the bathroom outlets. I actually think, if you have to have a light in the bathroom, a better choice would be the "button" kind, that you push and the light stays on for a few minutes, that would be more pleasant for all during the middle of the night. The light switch to the bathroom is on the outside of the bathroom door, there is no way to not let light into the cabin. Also, my husband, on more than one occasion, has turned the bathroom light off on me whilst in the shower :) .

Duct tape, well, I've just never needed it. It's on every packing list in the world, but I could not, would not, tape a hem into place. I check my clothing before I leave home for repair. If I needed a repair, I'd use a safety pin, or I do have a very small mending kit (the size of a match book). I would never pack a suitcase to its bursting point and I check the bag for repair before leaving home.

Lanyard, well, I suppose it's just a matter of taste there, just like duct tape. I wear pants with pockets, have a very small travel wallet on a string, an evening bag in the evening. I actually have a nice beaded lanyard I purchased years ago, never once have used it, but I have packed it a few times thinking I will. I can see it would be of great use for children, though.

So, if you don't know what an item is used for, just because it's recommended, even by a travel professional, doesn't mean you'll really need it. The ships are very sophisticated and will provide for all your needs, with the exception of your clothing and very personal needs, plus a good camera. Even then, they do sell clothing, carry bags, toiletries, cameras and such onboard, although at premium prices. A person could actually get by for the week with just the clothes on their back and a wad of cash or credit ;) .

You say this will be your first cruise, I hope it's wonderful for you!

WOW, and DH thinks I bring a lot of stuff, I should show him this list and he will rethink his comments about what I bring.

may I please ask what is a lanyard?

(only referring to the packing and or takeing stuff) the list of before you leave is basically what I do as to what pertains to me as I dont have animals or a private home so some stuff just doesnt apply

may I please ask what is a lanyard?

It's that thing you hang around your neck to carry an ID, keys, or in a cruise context, your pass/room key/ship charge card. Generally has a hook or something similar on the end, to grab onto the item. They take a lot of forms, could be as narrow as a shoelace, could be about an inch wide of a woven form, we used to make them at Scout camps by using various braiding techniques and this flat plastic cording (about 1/8 inch wide) called -- you guessed it -- lanyard!

These are often giveaways by various companies or events, or you can find them at places like WalMart...

Happy ks...Just an fyi...a battery operated candle works great as a bathroom nightlight. ;)

What a great list! I would love to have you e-mail it to me susanschroder@comcast.net. We are cruising on Enchantment of the Sea out of Ft Lauderdale on May 8,2006 to the Western Caribbean. It is our first cruise-we are both very excited. I am the one with the packing "issues" and do need as much help as I can get. Thanks! Susie aka Sandune at Cruise Critic.com
