Going on the Viking Skyon the Iconic Western Mediterranean departing from Rome in February 2023 Rome to Barcelona. Will we get to see any of Rome or will we simply go from the Airport to the port? Not interested in the pre-cruise extension, as we have book a post-cruise extension in Barcelona!

As there are no excursions on embarkation day, your only option is to leave the ship if you have time after check-in and before departure—assuming you’re arriving day of with a Viking transfer. But there won’t be a shuttle so you’re on your own—and you’d need to make sure you don’t miss sail-away 😄

Experienced travelers, if not doing a Viking extension, will come in on their own to spend a few days in the eternal city. 🏛

When you land, you will go directly from the airport to Civitavecchia.  Going to Rome first doubles the length of an already long bus ride (and after a long flight, most people just want to get onboard the ship). Rome, Civitavecchia (where the ship docks) and the airport are three points on a triangle, all of which are about equidistant from one another.

Viking will start boarding arriving pax as soon as all of those who are departing have cleared the ship (usually around 10 am).

Getting into Rome on your own is not practical on arrival day unless you arrange a private tour to pick you up at the airport and drive you into Rome before taking you to the ship. For this you need four to five hours, of which at least two hours will be spent getting to and from Rome. You will need to be at the ship at least 2 hours before sail away time (which you can locate on your Viking invoice).

If you are more than 60 days from departure and have not yet been ticketed, you still have time to change your flights so that you can arrive in Rome a few days early and spend a few days on your own seeing the city. Viking will not provide transfer and you have to get yourself from the airport to Rome and then Rome to the ship (all easily done by train or limo depending on your budget). Or you can find out if it is not too late add the Rome pre-cruise extension.

Straight from airport to the ship.  As mentioned before if you want to see Rome, you'll need to fly in a few days earlier on your own or add a Viking pre-cruise extension.  Based on my recent experience with Viking's tour operator in Italy & France (Trumpy Tours), I'm recommending doing it on your own.
