Safe to tour?

Recently spoke with a St Thomas retailer who asked about my future sailings, when I mentioned Belize City, I was warned to be very careful due to being unsafe and lots of criminal activity.  Wondering if I should just stay on the ship.  US Travel advisory in October was listed as a level 3 even in tourist areas.  Has anyone been there recently and had issues?  Traveling in April.  TIA

I would be leery of any retailer on another island, far away from Belize, warning about potential danger.  US Travel Advisories are typically overstating risk as well and base these on country wide events.    That said, as with anywhere, you need to be aware of surrounding, and don't bring things with you that attract criminals.  Excursions are fine if organized and guided by reputable vendors.
