Namib Desert: Rated Tops!

From the New York Times Travel Section this weekend, they have this headline: 52 Places to Go in 2023" with this sub-headline: "Travel’s rebound has revealed the depth of our drive to explore the world. Why do we travel? For food, culture, adventure, natural beauty?

Namib Desert is one their top world locations that this annual NY Times reporting puts in the spotlight.  Here are some of their highlights: “Along the desolate coast of Namibia, 1,000-foot-tall sand dunes descend into the sea. During low tide, intrepid adventurers can drive along the beach, past towering yellow dunes on one side and the South Atlantic’s churning waters on the other. This is the Namib, the world’s oldest desert. After almost three years of Covid-19 restrictions, it’s hard to imagine a place where you can feel more free.  'Namib' means 'vast place' in Khoekhoegowab, a language spoken in many parts of Namibia. In the Namib-Naukluft National Park, travelers can go back in time at the Deadvlei, where 600-year-old trees stand eerily lifeless, preserved by the dry air; challenge themselves to climb the 100-story Big Daddy Dune; observe desert-adapted wildlife like oryx and springbok; and even see mysterious fairy circles.”

We super enjoyed Cape Town, South Africa, etc., as detailed below in my live/blog, when visiting there in early 2016.  But, due to limited time and budget, did not make it to Namib Desert.  Should it be on our future to-do list?

Love to see your travel details. We are going to Africa this year. How do I connect?

As noted at the bottom of my original post, we have not yet visited Namib Desert, but it is on our future to-do list.

For our 2016 exploring of Cape Town, sailing/stopping along South Africa’s coastal locations, visiting Mozambique, traveling to Victoria Falls/Zambia and doing three different safari visits/sites in Botswana's famed Okavango Delta, I provided a connection to my live/blog at:

Check out that site for many pictures, details, etc.  Let me know any questions, etc.

THANKS for your interest!  Enjoy!  Terry in Ohio

Need to consider winter escapes?  From Condé Nast Traveler magazine earlier this month, they had this headline: 19 Warm Places to Visit" with this sub-headline:  "The only ice you’ll see is in your cocktail.

Here are some of the highlights:Namibia:  Average winter temperatures (measured along the coast/Namib Desert): High of 68 degrees, low of 59 degrees.  If your idea of a perfect winter escape involves safaris rather than sunbathing, then Namibia is perfect for you. The beautiful country has seen a boom in tourism recently, thanks in large part to the fact that it’s more accessible than ever. The last few years have seen a proliferation of connecting flights into Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, through hubs like Johannesburg on South African Airways, Amsterdam on KLM, Doha on Qatar Airways.  And with some of Africa’s most navigable roads, road-tripping has exploded—especially among anyone eager for Instagram fodder.

From the London/UK Sunday Times this weekend, they had this headline: Best holiday destinations for 2024 with one of their highlights focused on this Africa location.

Among their reporting highlights: Namibia is perhaps Africa’s most visually fascinating country, from the sand mountains of the south along the fog-belt of Skeleton Coast, through the fantasy landscapes of the Brandberg Mountain Range and the ephemeral rivers of Kaokoland in the north. And to the east, Etosha National Park: an 1,800-square-mile salt pan wandered by lions, leopards, elephants and oryx. Driving here is mildly challenging: the gravel roads demand low speeds and concentration; you should fill up at every petrol station you pass; and you should carry a ten-gallon jerry can of water — just in case.”
