Divi Posted February 26, 2023 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2023 How are you reimbursed for an insurance claim? If you cancel a shore excursion, the payment is refunded to the cc used. With an insurance claim it isn’t HAL refunding the money but a third party, correct? We really don’t want a huge amount refunded to a cc. Any information and advice would be appreciated. Thank you Are you talking about canceling before the trip, or filing a claim once the trip starts? Twice I have canceled with platinum and received the refund to my credit card. Once your trip starts, HAL converts your platinum plan into an insurance policy, and you then deal with the insurance company. Adding- I was able to get my credit card company to reimburse me instead of carrying a positive balance for an extended period of time. Divi Posted February 26, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted February 26, 2023 This would be a cancellation before the cruise starts.
Dismomx5 Posted February 26, 2023 #5 Share Posted February 26, 2023 We used the Platinum insurance when DH tested positive for COVID before our Alaska cruise. Everything that was owed to us went back on to our credit card/gift cards that were used for the payments. FCD that we'd paid for were put back into the system. It was done quickly and we were pleased.
Florida_gal_50 Posted February 26, 2023 #6 Share Posted February 26, 2023 It went to my credit card. Like the previous poster I got my credit card to cut me a cheque after proving that the payment came out of my bank account 🙄.

Just to clarify, both my cancellations were prior to leaving- so HAL was still the holder of the funds.

GlennG Posted February 26, 2023 #9 Share Posted February 26, 2023 I paid the entire amount of money for our cruise by VISA credit card. When I cancelled the cruise, our credit card was credited with 90% of the money that we spent in paying for the cruise. My bank was able to transfer the positive credit reserve to our joint bank account. In short, I was quite pleased with the process.
Real NHDOC Posted February 27, 2023 #10 Share Posted February 27, 2023 Cancellation insurance is a huge margin item for the cruise lines. They make the punitive cancellation rules then sell you “insurance” to reimburse you 80% (the 10% you pay up front plus the 10% you lose when you cancel) for coverage that only applies to the 90 days before the cruise that you can’t cancel within. Everyone has to make their own decision about the value of the insurance to them but personally I have never bought it and never had to cancel so am way ahead. We usually pay with a credit card that covers up to $10K per trip but would not hold our breath waiting for them to pay out. We’ve been lucky but figuring we’ve probably spent $150K on cruises over the past 5 years have pocketed $15K we would have paid for insurance so could absorb a loss if we had to and still be way ahead.
