I have not done Hawai'i during the summer, but my experience is that with that big stretch of ocean there will be weather at sea & this year the weather is being shall we say, very creative...I would not say the seas were terribly bad although there were seasoned cruisers who were very sick the first days out, so they would probably disagree with me...the pools were not closed most of the time & I don't think they were drained, it was more that we had strange movement than that it was so much...I certainly recovered from my post cruise vertigo faster this year than I did last year...hope the seas are good to you in June

the flower leis are done with the cruise staff & there is no charge...the crochet & nut ones were done by our Hawai'ian ambassadors & were pretty pricy...I bought one kit (I had wanted to learn to make them since our 2019 cruise) & considered it the cost of lessons...they do charge to your room account so if you have OBC you can use that, some on our cruise kept buying more to make...what crafts they have exactly will depend on which Hawai'ian ambassadors you have...

I have never been on the Emerald, so I can't really answer your question...the Crown I think is between the Ruby (which is maybe very like the Emerald) & the Grand...seems fairly similar to both of those with some differences, but if you mean how is the Emerald doing maintenance etc wise, I don't have any answers...

in the kitchen for the MDR, but the one time I ordered a burger in the MDR (different cruise) it felt like it had sat around for awhile so never tried that again, you could perhaps try asking at the Salty Dog Grill as they cook them right there (especially if it was a time they were not too busy)

Sea Day~March 13

A Day of Surprises

Because this is one of those big birthday years (think medicare), I told Princess I was celebrating even though it isn’t for a couple of months. It is always interesting to see what, if anything, Princess will do for a birthday or other celebration. Today was the day of birthday (& other) surprises.

I was surprised when someone waiting for the elevator with us called me by name until I saw this:

The door sign was magnetic & reusable (although I saw a bunch of different kinds of signs on doors).

I was especially surprised when I came back from morning crafts to see our room steward had brought me these!!

…& of course, the birthday cake…usually I catch them before there is singing, but this time they snuck up on me….there was even a real lighted candle on the cake…since I wanted Sabatini’s dessert more than this they delivered it to my room later (& only ended up taking one bite…usually the mouse inside is good but it was a very strange texture)…

I was also given my first duck!...not for my birthday, just because...

…& totally not birthday related, but the best surprise of the day was the letter telling us that Princess was giving us 15% of our cruise fare in FCC (this is not the first cruise I have missed ports on, not even the most ports missed, but the first time we have been compensated in any way for our missed ports).

Sea Day~March 13

DaVinci Lunch

My sissy has decided they have figured out the hollandaise sauce for the eggs benedict after the first day & so wanted to go back for more. I ordered the gyro-style pork pita sandwich. Except for the pita bread, there was nothing about it that resembled a gyro & it was not very tasty either. Her meringue citrus tartlet was tasty. I have discovered that there are many Princess desserts that are not worth the calories & I often stick to International Cafe cookies (this cruise, the peanut butter, when they could be found were disappointing, but the oatmeal were excellent).

Since we will be in Sabatini’s for dinner, here are the dinner menus as well. Somehow we always seem to go to the specialty restaurants on Italian night.

Sabatini’s

We often get specialty dining from our travel agent & this time I hadn’t been able to make reservations before the cruise on the app, so we were assigned this evening at Sabatini’s & decided not to change it.

I must say, the Sabatini's on the Crown is lovely. Spacious, well laid out with aft views. We asked & they gave us a table with a view of the sunset.

I was not excited looking at the new menu but we chose to give it a try.

Stuzzichino della casa: arancini al tartufo, breads

I missed the specialty Sabatini's rolls with rosemary sprigs (so delicious), instead there were generic ones (good enough but nothing special):

the arancini were also a sad replacement for the zonzelle & prosciutto as the opener:

Zuppe e Insalata: ribollita (good), insalata mista (surprisingly delicious)

my BIL liked the soup & crouton (served on a separate plate):

the insalata was perhaps the best thing I ate there, absolutely delicious:

Antipasti: fritto misto alla Veneziana

I couldn't find an antipasti that I wanted to try, but my family liked the fritto misto (although they couldn't come up with a sauce for my sissy that didn't have peppers in it to dip it or the arancini):

Primi piatti: seafood linguini, lobster tortelloni, spaghetti polpette

the two seafood dishes were good but the spaghetti was way aldenti

Secondi piatti: filetto de branzino alle erbe mediterranee, ossobuco milanese, scallopini di pollo al limone e rosmarino

the Branzino was good:

ossobuco was good but the giant serving of risotto was gummy & unpleasant:

chicken scallopini (no photo) was really rubbery

Dolci: specialita della chef...rocher (the round ball in chocolate), tiramisu, vanilla panna cotta, zabaglione marsala

the chef' s specialty is fun, but the plating was very disappointing compared to previous incarnations (glass goblets rather than the bowls you find in the buffet)

I know that many people are very excited by the new menu, but for me it is just kind of sad. I preferred the old one (I can't eat shellfish, so my options are limited)...also the last two times we have eaten at Sabatini's we have been disappointed (2 different ships, once the old menu & once the new one) in both the quality of the food & the service.

Evening Entertainment

Other than the production shows, I usually only go to see the magicians in the theater. Tonight was R J Cantu. I think if they did not play the video introduction making us expect an extraordinary magician he would not have been so disappointing. I did laugh out loud at one trick with a banana instead of a bandana, but the rest was a little bit boring.

The next show was much more enjoyable. Tiki Dave did The Jukebox of our Lives in the Explorer’s lounge. This show was a fun, interactive journey through musical memories backed up by the show band. It was a wonderful end to another fun day at sea.

Wrap Up & Random Thoughts

At the end of a lovely day full of surprises & fun, it is time to kick the bears out of bed so we can sleep. thank you for your kind words & joining the trip...I know some people probably think it is silly to bring our own blankets, but it is one of the pluses when sailing from our hometown....I really like a cuddly blankiet & find the Princess (& most hotel) covers too stiff & heavy & would probably leave some clothes home rather than my blanket (plus it makes the room look a little less generic...I'd rather not spend 2 weeks in a room with no personality...but thats the great thing about cruisisng we all get to do what works for us...

I see the weather changing, In general..would you say you wore more pants and tops with sleeves than tshirts and shorts on this cruise?
I am starting to pack now for our Hawaii cruise, but I’m realizing it isn’t the sunny, warm vacation I thought it was going to be. Like, we usually cruise the Caribbean, which means get up in the morning, throw on shorts, get your bathing suit packed and head to the beach.
I didn’t notice in any of your posts that anyone was actually swimming in the waters, anywhere.

I don't spend a lot of time around the pool, but this is what I noticed, by the 3rd sea day there were people lying out around the pool (they may have been before, but that is when we went to salty dog grill & I noticed them)...they were very not tan people so I am imagining from places where there is real winter, not like So Cal people...by the next morning there were women swimming in the pool when we went to breakfast....on the way back there were people around the pool all they way until the last day...in Hawai'i I wore t's & capris so definitely would be ok for shorts...I've never cruised the Caribbean but probably more chance of rain in Hawai'i but its warm anyway...people did grab towels & head for the beach at the ports (we just aren't swimming in the ocean or lying out in the sun people)...I wore mostly pants & t's or short-sleeved shirts onboard, my sissy wore mostly long-sleeved ones so I don't have a great answer for you, definitely bring a sweater or light jacket, because sometimes they have trouble with the dining room being too cold as the weather changes..I hope that helps (I guess go by the daily tems & figure out if that is comfortable for you....in general the weather the first 2 days was comparable to what it was like in CA when we left, so if our weather gets more normal the cruise will warm up then as you get closer to Hawai'i it will get more like their weather .

Thanks so much. I’m not a lay around the pool in a bathing suit kind of person, but was hoping to go for a dip in the water at each island.
I definitely have packed a couple of sweaters, a pashmina, 2 pairs of pants, 2-long sleeve tops, a hoodie and a wind breaker jacket.
I do know it can be chilly in the MDR and the theatre.

other than the norweigan offers I have almost never seen one night of speciality dining included in the best offers on princess or whith my chase travel agent or costco or from other on line travel agencies. is that only because your family book 2 or 3 cabins at the same time for the same cruise?

There was a promotion a little while ago that included one night of specialty dining. I think that’s how it ended up to be hard to get a reservation, though.

no, it is something our TA's company has often done (think national company that provides roadside assistance, insurance & travel & is best known by its 3 matching initials) one cruise last year (maybe Hawai'i) we had one from our TA & one as part of the Princess sale when we booked, never did specialty dining before they started including that as a perk a few years ago & don't know if we would if it wasn't included especially as they keep raising the prices & you never know if it will be really good or no better than the food that is included

yes we had that on one of our cruises...now with all the premier packages I don't know if they will be able to have reservations for everyone who is entitled to it?

today was finally shorts & t's weather (at least mid-day) here at the port & it looks like it will be warming up over the next 10 days so maybe by the time you sail it will be better for you.

Sea Day~March 14

Formal Night, Captain’s Circle Cocktail Party, DaVinci Dinner & a Show

The last formal night was also the Captain's Circle Party. I’m not actually sure why I go…but there is a free drink or two & we learned that our cruise had 614 gold members, 331 ruby, platinum 594 & elite 423 (that leaves room for more than 1000 first time passengers if we are full & it seems like we should be close). The 3rd most traveled guests had over 1500 days & the 1st & 2nd had over 2000. They did the drwaing from the medallions, not by collecting the invitations.

We stopped to see if we could be seated early for dinner, but no, so we went to listen to Tiki Dave in the Piazza. Then dinner at our assigned time.

Starters: iceberg wedge (without the blue cheese), lime & salt cured-salmon with sweet chili sauce, lemon scented ravioli with truffle oil (all good)

Entrees: broiled lobster tail (ok///all the butter on this sailing was very yellow), beef wellington with truffle-madeira demi glace (very disappointing with raw pastry)

The last production show, Encore, was very good.

Wrap Up & Random Thoughts

On sea days going to Hawai’i there are a lot of things related to our destination, but on the trip back they usually add more things about the ship. Today was Meet the Show Cast where several members talked about being in the cast. The whole cast shares the same contract & joins & leaves the ship together. They talked about the hiring process (all the female singers must have a solid soprano range, no pure altos) & spending 6-8 weeks at the Princess main campus in Santa Clarita learning the productions. Sadly they aren’t doing tours of the theater backstage anymore. But it was an interesting presentation. I enjoy the little insights into crew matters.

In the evening along with our patters, we received our disembark instructions & luggage tags.

One Last Day at Sea

In the morning was the “cooking demonstration” with the executive chef & head of restaurant operations. This is always a very fun time, much more of a comedy show than a cooking one. Once again, it is sad that they no longer do the galley tour afterwards. They did tell us that there would be a dessert extravaganza in the Cafe Caribe buffet later.

We went to one last lunch in the MDR. The seafood salad louis was rather strange as it had mostly mussels instead of the shrimp or crab that would be expected. the teriyaki chicken was ok. We didn’t have dessert because we were going to the dessert extravaganza afterward.

The dessert extravaganza was full of really beautiful, fancy looking desserts. Unfortunately, none of the ones we tried were worth a second bite.

The highlight of the day for us was the Aloha Oe show featuring the hula & ‘ukulele classes. They did a great job & the theater was fuller than for some of the late shows.
