How are the beaches in San Juan, Puerto Rico?

I see there's a 'learn to surf' excursion, but I don't want a lesson, just access to a surf board or body board for the day!  Are there good waves (obviously that depends on a lot of factors)?  Are the beaches near the cruise ships over crowded?

There aren't beaches near the cruise ships.  Taxi ride.  Based on past experiences, I'd venture a ship excursion to "Learn to Surf" will be crowded and full of novices with guides paying attention to them. But if using Spectrum Surf School, the instructors are good.

For DIY, look up Escambron Beach or La Ocho Surf Shop.
