Gibraltar…….private tours

Recommended Posts

We are booked on the Ascent in May of 2024.  One of our stops Gibraltar UK.  We would love to do a private tour that includes the Rock of Gibraltar.  Would love your suggestions.  What have you all done while in this port?  Appreciate any HELP.  Thanks so much!

The http://www.gibraltartaxiassociation.com/tours have this pretty sewn up. There is no competition for taxis, but they are regulated.

If you are fit enough and want something different you can try https://ebike-gibraltar.com/

Some people walk into town and take the cable car up to the top, but the queues can be quite long, and of course, you won't have a guide.

Also, check out the tourist information https://www.visitgibraltar.gi/

As well as the Taxi Assoc there are

https://www.rocktoursgibraltar.com/

https://www.gibraltar-rock-tours.com/

https://www.rocktoursgibraltar.com/online-booking#shoreexcursions

https://gibraltar-sightseeing.com/

https://www.gibraltarvictorytours.com/

https://www.toursofgibraltar.com/tours/standard-tour

A few others too, some may be booking agencies like Viator rather than operators,

The Upper Rock is a must - St Michael's Cave, the Skywalk, the Apes' feeding station, & the Great Siege Tunnels are the essentials. Other sight up there include the Windsor suspension bridge,  Princess Anne's or Princess Amelia batteries and, on the way down, the Moorish castle.

The World War 11 tunnels are currently closed.

Finishing with a sea-level circumnavigation adds only about 20 - 25 minutes & includes Europa Point, the Mediterranean side & Catalan Bay.

In town the 100-ton gun, Alameda Gardens, the little Trafalgar cemetery, and Main Street which leads  from there to Casemates Square is lined with shops, cafes & pubs plus minor sights like the Governor's House. Those town sights don't need transportation or a guide, best done at your own pace.

Thanks for the above recommendations for Gilbraltar tours.  The tour price is set and based on a group of 8 to fill their vans. They advise to go on CC roll call to find guests that maybe interested in sharing the tour and pay cash at the end.  Just worried about guests that may back out at the last minute once you have formed a group of 8.  I read that there may be taxis at the cruise terminal offering tours and the tour starts when 8 guests fill up their taxi vans. We are interested in The Upper Rock sites, Europa Point and drive across the runway..2.5 to 3hr tour.  Do you know if Gibraltar Taxi Association offers these tours? Thank you!

The shared tours offered at the cruise terminal are the standard tour (about 1 hour 45), but you can ask the driver for a price if at the end of the tour he could add a sea-level circumnavigation (which includes Europa Point) and a one or two way runway crossing (there's now a tunnel), see if others in the van are willing to share, and those who are willing can figure whether it's worth the extra cost.

We've joined a few CC RollCall group shared tours on various ships, but never organised one ourselves - mainly for the reason that you mention. It would work out if you found reliable sharers for your customised tour but I'd be inclined to play safe, join a shared tour at the pier, and see if it can be extended at reasonable cost.

We did once fix up a speedboat trip up the Saigon River from Saigon to the Cu Chi tunnels That was on a small ship with no RollCall but we'd decided it was worth the cost even if we couldn't find sharers during the cruise. Not only did we find enough sharers, we were also having to turn a lot down - a brilliant trip for a cost lower than seats on a slow, hot & dusty bus 🙂

Irrelevant to your circumstances, I just wanted to share our good fortune.🙄

Thank you so much for the info and advice!  Yes, I am hesitant to organize a private tour as the tour cost would stay the same if some people cancelled.  We will play it safe and join a shared tour at the pier.

We also have joined some CC Roll Call group shared tours. We joined a tour in Cartagena. The tour was based on price per person basis, not a group/van set total price ... so it didn't matter if some guests cancelled at the last minute. I have organized some private taxi tours in Greece for us and our friends...reliable sharers😉.

Hey! Small world...we were some of those people on a "slow, hot & dusty bus". We were visiting Vietnam on own DIY land tour and took a bus tour from Saigon to Cu Chi tunnels last year.  However, our bus was fast and had air-con. 😂  We loved the tour! The included boat rides down the river in 'junk boats'  and paddle boats was nice too. We loved Vietnam and definitely want to visit again. Loved your good fortune... thank you for sharing.
