HELP~~~~Cruising Burnout

LadySpoilt

Recommended Posts

I think I am sick! It finally happened. I think am suffering from "Cruising Burnout". After 18 or so cruises it seems I am losing my passion for cruising.
Just back last week from the Conquest and while we had a great time, I am considering cancelling my Sept Mariner cruise because cruising seems to be getting old to me.
HELP!! Has/does anyone else feel this way? Please tell me this temporary insanity will go away!!!!!
DH seemed surprised this morning when I mentioned to him I really wasn't sure if I wanted to cruise again in Sept (actually surprised wasn't it...floored maybe).
Sandra...who thinks she may be suffering from temporary insanity!!!!(HOPEFULLY ONLY TEMPORARY!!!)or is going through a weird sort of MID-life crisis!!!!

Sounds like you need a break.Take a land vacation or just stay home and pretend you are on vacation. We only do 1 vacation a year. We take our kids. They chose another cruise as our upcoming 05 vacation. However as they get older it will be easier and easier to vacation with them and still be relaxed. Like my dh says there are so many places to go and see why limit yourself to just cruising??? Have fun deciding!

Hi LadySpoilt, I know what you mean. We took a rest for the past 3 years, but now I'm ready again because we'll be introducing our grandchildren to cruising. It puts it into a whole new light because they're mid to late teens and it'll be fun. If you haven't tried it already, try the Greek Islands or Hawaiian Islands. It's a great change of pace from the Caribbean and South American ports. Wishing you lots of fun.

You're OK. It actually happens! I took a 7-year hiatus from cruising, but I'm back on track now!

In the interim, I've flown to several islands, as well as taken land vacations. Did a lot of the "See the U.S.A.", and now I'm back, high on cruising!

What's your cruise history?

Maybe it's time to try a new line or cruise to a different part of the world.

I think I do understand your "burnout" feeling ...we just took our 5th cruise in one year ...and over 25 in the last 6 years....

We have tried several other lines and that was a nice change from Carnival ...we actually took the Noordam (an older Holland American ship) for a 14 day cruise ...and a 10 day cruise on the Brilliance of the Seas (RCCL)....I think when you have very few sea days that that makes it more "routine" and can make you tired when you return from your cruise which could be the feeling you are getting ..

We just booked a totally different type cruise ...15 day on Princess to Hawaii...we have always cruise the Caribbean and visited many of the same ports on the past 25+ cruises and also cruised the same ships many different times....

so variety of ports/length of cruise/different cruise lines have given us the feeling that we are not "burn-out" yet

Just IMHO the things that might help avoid "cruise burn-out" ...

Not to worry...it's just temporary insanity!

I, too, felt the same after we had taken 3 or 4 cruises in a 15 month period. And almost all of them were on the same cruiseline (Carnival).

We've cut back somewhat and made different choices (Princess, Celebrity, etc.). Not that we don't like Carnival, but we find it can get boring doing the same cruiseline over and over again, especially when the menus change so infrequently. We'll be doing a southern Caribbean 10 day for the first time next March on Celebrity.

We've decided to try and plan our vacations in the future with one cruise in the winter months, a land trip to our timeshare in Marco Island in mid-May, and another cruise in September, with a second week after the cruise to follow at our timeshare in Marco Island.

We have a third timeshare that we will probably use to slip in another week to a totally different place.

Fortunately, no medication will be needed to get you over this malady!

We've been doing at least one all-inclusive every year, or a trip to Europe or Hawaii. It's different than cruising, and is land-based. I know how you feel! After more than 20 cruises, there are times we just want to chill out at a nice resort and not have to get up at the crack of Dawn to go through Immigration or stand in line for a tender. The cruises we tend to do now are to places we haven't been to a kazillion times. (Unfortunately, they cost more!). We were on the Zuiderdam Western last year, and only got off the ship at Half Moon Cay. Is that sick or what??

Chris raises a good point, maybe it's time to throw a curve-ball into your cruising portfolio. Or, as some of the other posters have indicated, try a *shudder* land-based vacation at some nice corner of paradise.

Just keep in mind, though: Like any true addiction, you may eventually become a bit jaded or insensitive to the high. However, when you decide you're gonna try kicking the habit, you'll get those withdrawal pangs and come crawling back, begging ... anything for your next fix ... Do Not, I repeat,DO NOT,cancel your upcoming Mariner cruise. You do not want to miss that ship. I was just on her in April, cruise #9,and she's the most magnificent ship I have ever seen.So take that 1 more cruise, then decide to look for something different,if you must. Funny this should come up right now. We were driving home from Long Beach this past weekend and my DH said lets do something different next year. In 2006 we are already obligated to go to Alaska with friends for their 50th Anniversary. So now we think and plan something else.

I can relate. I have been flying to Florida and Germany so much in the past 10 years that I don't care if go again anytime soon. I know I will fly to Germany at least twice this year to visit my grandmother and father, bu the novelty has worn off. I plan on moving to Florida next year, so that may explain why I feel a bit lathargic about flying there over my vacations this year.

Relax Spoilt....it will go away.......it just seems so soon right after you get back probably but the excitement will build as it gets closer...I know I just got back and am so exhauted that I'm not excited all that much about my next cruise but give me a week to rest up and I'll be all fired up again...lol... .....I'm not sure I could do a back to back as I put so much into a cruise with very little sleep that I'm so ready to come home the final morning of debarkation...but a week or so later I'm rested and ready to go again. Thanks for all the replies. Many of you have hit upon the same thought I had....just a little to much "Carnival". In my 18 or so cruises, all but one have been on Carnival and the last 3 all on the Conquest, maybe a change of lines is what I need. The same shows, jokes, menus, cruise directors, etc. may be contributing to "burnout". DH and I still have the Mariner (RCL) deposited for September and have until 6/11 to pay the final payment so I have a bit longer to make the decision to cancel or go (DH I think still wants to go, so most likely we will). Maybe switching lines and trying RCL this year, and maybe Princess next year will restore my love of cruising...and make me remember how much I loved Carnival.
Also, Randy you may be right too, I just returned last week from one, and maybe haven't fully rested up from it...., I haven't even reset my countdown clock on my desk at work (there is DEFINATELY something wrong here!)as usually I am counting down to my next cruise from the moment we disembark.
Thanks again
Spoilt

We just "discovered" cruising about 3 years ago and now that I'm addicted I find myself suffering from Las Vegas burnout. Until now we would visit 2 or more times a year (since 1989)but we already missed our February trip this year and when we return in August it will be a year since our last visit.
My husband has been very patient with me but I see he is going through withdrawal right now. He too enjoys cruising but needs that Vegas fix. ( It's lucky we live near Atlantic City so he can get a slight taste of the machines when needed).
With all that said in 3 weeks we will be on a cruise to Alaska, his choice not mine !!

I have to agree with the ones that tell you to try a different line. I really like Carnival but after my cruise in March aboard the Triumph, I came home needing a change. I am now booked on RCI for my next seven day cruise. I am now looking for something for 2005 and Carnival is not on the list for several reasons but the main one is just being tired of the same old thing cruise after cruise. IHHO, I think that you should try the Mariner. It might just spark that flame again.

I have to admit, although my last cruise was a blast, I still found myself being a bit over critical of the same lame jokes, the same menu, the similar shows, the similar gameshows, the same exact items in all of the ships stores, and the same announcements all day long for the "one of a kind jewelry special", or the "this week only spa special". I'm glad that my next cruise is on RCL, cannot WAIT to sail Mariner (and I hope you don't cancel Sandra! After Miracle, hubby and I might take a break for a bit, though!! Our checkbook will thank us, and there is alot that we want to do around here (roof, furniture, etc...).

Who knows, I may not be able to stand not sailing with all of my friends on the Caribbean Princess, and I might only be temporarily insane, time will tell.

You aren't sick, LadySpoilt. And you're definitely not alone.

I was wondering if there was something wrong with me. Just got off the PRIDE several weeks ago, the GLORY last October and suddenly I hardly spend any time even thinking about another cruise. Usually I'm "plotting and scheming" on a new cruise immediately. Maybe Alaska, maybe on a different line, or maybe I'll just go to Europe this Fall, I just seem so disinterested I scare myself.

After 12 cruises, I don't care if I ever hear the shipboard cabin toilet jokes again.
This last cruise was the first time, I actually had absolutely no remorse getting off the ship, driving home and getting back into the routine of my daily life. Disgusting isn't it? Susanita,
Chances are that we will still sail the Mariner in Sept. Maybe the change to RCL will be what I need to "recoop". I definately will though be on the Miracle in February. That is my solo cruise to offset DH's solo dive vacation (I like to keep things even!! LOL)
So most likely we'll be sailing together twice in the next several months.
