POLL - wearing a tux

Hi everyone:

I just wanted to get a feel for the gentlemen who wear a tux and those who choose a nice suit.

 

We're sailing on Rhapsody and I've been tossing the idea of renting a tux on board for DH or buying him a new suit (he could use it for other engagements in the future)...

 

Just want to get a sense of how many men dress in tux attire vs those in nice suits.

I am wearing my Dress White uniform for the first formal night on Mariner, and my tux for the second. I decided after the first cruise to go buy a tux because I wanted my own. I did not feel the slightest bit uncomfortable on Grandeur last year in a suit on formal night. Either way, I think you'll be happy, but a tux is special. For those of you who like to belittle guys who wear a tux, you may fire when ready!

I get so few occasions to wear a tux in my daily routine, it is fun to wear a tux while my DW gets all decked out. Formal nights on a cruise ship feels kind of like going to the prom again. I’ve been on Rhapsody three times and you’ll see about 50% of the men wearing a tux on formal nights. I’m sure you’ll have a great time whatever you decide to do.

I own my tux and look for opportunities to wear it. We have fun getting dressed up on the formal nights - even if we seem to be more and more in the minority.

My hubby wears a tux for one of the formal nights, now that he owns his own. On our 1st cruise, he didn't own a tux, so he just wore dark suits. It's really to each his own--there are probably more suits than tuxes--at least that I've noticed. I enjoy dressing up, too, so those "formal" nights aren't at all stressful for us!

I do dress in suites for work so I enjoy wearing a tux now and then. I rent a tux on board which means I don't have to pack a couple of suites, shirts, ties,or shoes. I've never had an issue with the rentals on board. In fact I rented on for our cruise on the Serenade in 2 weeks.:)

I have a black tux jacket made of chenille and mink w/ satin collar. Then I wear nice tux pants and a white pleated shirt that has blue & grey strips sewn down it with a blue or grey satin tie and nice black shoes. This was I feel formal but stylish as opposed to feeling I came from a wedding or prom.

We love formal nights - we cruise at least twice a year and we both look forward to getting dressed and making a night of it. Often times our 12 year old daughter cruises with us - she loves formal nights! She's such a little lady and loves dressing to the 9's

I think a nice suit looks nice. I howver rent a Tux from Cruise Line Formal for convenience. I own several nice suits, however transporting then is a real hassle. By rentin them I get clothes for both formal nice that is a little nicer (yes I think a tux looks special), and I don't have the hassle of bringing my own. $75 seems like a real deal. In fact I leave on the Navigator next Saturday (March 18th), and I have rented a tux for my 11 year old son as well. My wife wants me to purchase one, but then I am back to transporting it back and forth.

 

Like I said, I think a suit is fine for those that prefer also. Frankly at the risk of being attacked, expecially on Royal Caribbean. On Crystal or Regent I would make sure I had a Tux.

I think you'll see about 50/50. There is absolutely nothing wrong with suit and tie.

 

That said, I bought my tux a few years back after renting a couple of times (a major space saver). Prior to renting, I was packing clothes for 2 suits. I found a good middle road, in that, it is quite easy to travel just 1 tux w/ 2 separate shirts and accessories. Depending on how well my shirts travelled, they may be sent of for a pressing as soon as I get my luggage. Otherwise the tux remains in fine shape and takes up only 1/2 the space 2 separate suits did.

 

I too enjoy finding reasons to put on the tux. It also doesn't hurt that Scheila enjoys when I wear the tux as well ;) .

 

It's fun to get dudded up for a couple of nights. I think we sometimes forget what it is like to have a nice formal evening. Sometimes I think we have become so casual about so many things. It's nice to see everyone all dressed up and having a good time.

My husband wears a tux on the formal nights because we enjoy dressing up. It feels more like a special occasion (which it is--we are on a cruise!). Its really all about what you enjoy. If you do not enjoy a tux, you should not wear one. You can always tell a guy that is not comfortable in his duds!

The choice I would make is missing from the poll.

* I would wear a sport coat and possibly tie on RCI, but defenitly a tux on Princess.

 

Don't ask. If you are honest about it you know why.

I always wear a white dinner jacket. I usually see at least one or two other men wearing them, and also some men in tuxedos, but more suits than formal attire.

Doesn't seem to change by destination or time of year.

Hey guys, we will go on our first Royal Caribbean cruise this July. My dad and I both bought a tux since we will have 2 formal nights. At JCPenny they had them on sale for around $150 - $160, so for that price it is worth it (I think). Plus I have my prom this May.

It depends on the cruise and the crowd. Next week we'll be traveling withour kids and I don't feel like breaking out the tux. The trip will be a little less foraml for us this year. When just the wife and go, I bring my tux and silk vest. Nothing like sitting at the Casino wearing a tux, smoking, drinking and trying to get the cocktail waitress to meet me afterwards, sans wife.

I dress casual at work all the time, so it doesn't hurt me to go all out for the 2 formal nights. For others, I believe it's their choice, no skin off my nose.

I bought a tux a few years back for a *very* reasonable price and have absolutely gotten my money's worth!

My DH wears a tux. He does get a chance to wear a suit a few times a year, but almost never a tux, so it’s something special. We are looking into buying him a tux this time, though. We’ve found a couple in the $200 range that look nice, so if he wears it twice, it’ll pay for itself.

My DH used to wear a dark navy suit on formal nights but then, out of the clear blue sky and without prompting, he told me he wanted to purchase a tux for the next cruise. So he did and he looks great!!

I wear a Tux on every formal night that my DW and I appear in the dining room or any public place outside of the Windjammer. It is interesting to note that over the past few years, people sitting at the captians table wear more suits than Tux's. The last occasion on the Mercury, only 2 of us wore Tux's and the last two on the Monarch, I was the only one wearing a Tux. Time are changing, but both my DW and I enjoy dressing up for formal nights.

My husband usually wears a black suit, but is considering his military mess dress (formal) for our next cruise. Anyone done that?

 

The dark suit was appropriate on all our cruises - RCCL and Princess.

I have really made a fashion faux paus then as I have purchased a dark suit with pinstripes to wear on formal night. I do not feel comfortable in the nice stuff as it is and now I have to deal with the issue of really sticking out with those darn pin stripes. Perhaps I can get the wife to skip them now!
