Shuttle to town, busy there with tourists & 3 cruise ships. Many heading out on numerous tours, especially Golden Circle & Blue Lagoon. As arrival was noon, MDR lunch was brought forward to 11:00 - 12:30. This was also good for the crew, as many had the time to head ashore. Two sea days before Greenland. We’ll need some “tender luck” for the weather for both our stops there.
Tranquility Base Posted August 3, 2023 #282 Share Posted August 3, 2023 The weather was suitable, so the Captain gave us the scenic cruising route through Prince Christian Sound on the way to Nanortalik. Very interesting, a few nice glaciers and quite narrow in places, surrounded by steep cliffs with waterfalls. A chilly but good day.

The hotel bar was busy with a number of cruisers….Leffe beer was very nice. Hopefully the weather holds for tomorrow as that is our last tender for this segment.

The Captain travelled the short distance direct and at good speed. This enabled the navigation around the ice easier in the daylight. I think we anchored about 11pm. Weather looks OK.

Tranquility Base Posted August 5, 2023 #292 Share Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) A nice day wandering the town. Saw some different viewpoints since last time. A colourful small town. Unfortunately it was a bit too early for the Rockhouse bar to be open. The gift shop here was far better stocked than at Nanortalik, so they did good business today. Numerous short boat trip operating out of the harbour. Very warm in the sun around noon, with barely a cloud in the sky. A good day to finish our short stop in Greenland. Two sea days to Cornerbrook. PS: Captain Pears is a great communicator. Very much enjoy his informative departure & arrival announcements. He goes to some lengths to explain what & why things are happening. Usually with a healthy dose of wit and humour thrown in. Edited August 5, 2023 by Tranquility Base
Tranquility Base Posted August 5, 2023 #293 Share Posted August 5, 2023 A good departure & evening. We reversed back abeam Zaandam for a few mutual hoots of the whistle and waves. Departure past a few small bergs before the sea fog rolled in. After dinner an “ Order of the Blue Nose party” with the excellent house band in the Universe. Well attended, and energetic dancing from Officers and passengers. A fitting departure from the Arctic Circle.

I love it when there is a captain like that on a cruise. I hope he's doing next year's worldie too. It sounds like you're having a wonderful cruise. I'm a bit envious but next year's is a better itinerary for us so I'll just have to be patient!
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted August 6, 2023 #295 Share Posted August 6, 2023 @Tranquility Base would it be possible for you to put together a summary of whether you need cash at the various ports you visit or whether you only need credit/debit cards? Probably only for things like souvenirs and snacks.

We got on in Dover. So far we've only used credit cards. The only guide we've tipped was in Qaqortoc and he accepted our US dollars. We will get some Canadian money tomorrow for tipping guides in the next 5 ports.
