Renting a car from Heathrow and drop off at Southampton?

Hi, has anyone rented a car from Heathrow and dropped it off at Southampton? Can it be done?

Cruising NCL Aug 8th. Any suggestions, the taxi fare is ukpds 275!!

Another Cruise Critic member recommended this car service.  We are using Jewels Transfer car service from Heathrow to Southampton and they will also pick us up at the ship for our return to Heathrow after the cruise. Reasonable price for private car service and much less stress.

You need to get better quotes for a pre-booked private transfer - Heathrow to Southampton is around £140 to £150 !!!

All major national & international rental agencies have depots at Heathrow, most have depots no more than a £10 taxi ride from any Southampton cruise terminal - in fact most are walkable, especially if you drop your luggage at the cruise terminal before returning the car. The main exception is Avis - their nearest depot is at Southampton airport, a taxi ride from there to a cruise terminal will be over £20

Bear in mind that.....

- most (all?) agencies charge a one-way fee, sometimes prohibitively expensive.

- Included CDW insurance normally carries an excess of £1200 to £1800 - if you choose zero excess thro the rental agency it can double the cost. 

- most (all?) Heathrow rental depots at Heathrow are remote from the terminals - a free ride, but time-consuming

- fuel will cost you around £15 to £20.

 

Renting a car gives you freedom if you want to meander & sight-see the south of England over 2 or 3 days pre-cruise, but it's very unlikely to be worth the cost or the grief for a simple airport-to-ship transfer.
