Frank183 Posted July 6, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 6, 2023 Dear all, sorry, a bit off topic here, we will take the QM2 from Southampton to New York on July 14th. To be safe, we will go to Southampton from Germany a day earlier. If all goes well, we will arrive at our hotel at West Quay around noon, our checkin time for QM2 is the next day at 3.30pm, which means we have some time to kill. Can anyone recommend places to visit or maybe just areas to stroll around? Is there like a day pass for public transport? Haven't been to England in almost 40 years (except for connecting at LHR) and I'd love to enjoy fish & chips for lunch and then maybe visit a typcial British pub in the evening in the West Quay area. I would be grateful for any recommendations! Thanks Frank
Rare NE John Posted July 6, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 6, 2023 We were just there and went to the Southampton SeaCity museum, a good maritime museum. There is lots of stuff regarding the Titanic too. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants as you walk along Above Bar Street going towards the water. We ate at Turtle Bay restaurant, Caribbean food and we enjoyed our meal there. It’s located right in the center of everything. Save some room for the fish and chips at the Golden Lion pub on QM2 too.
exlondoner Posted July 6, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 6, 2023 There are Roman/Saxon city walls, a Mediaeval Merchant’s House, the City Art Gallery is calm and impressive. If it is a nice day, a trip on the Hythe Ferry gives you a chance to see the Harbour.
TheOldBear Posted July 6, 2023 #4 Share Posted July 6, 2023 Look for postings on this forum from 'John Bull' - there was one called 'Southampton on a Sunday' which listed several options in town and nearby - and not just for Sundays 😉 On our last Southampton visit, we had the 'sunday roast' at the Duke of Wellington pub. We also have stopped in at the Dancing Man for a nice lunch [and nice beer]. If you are interested in aircraft, you may want to visit the Solent Sky museum - we are planning on that for our next turnaround day [October 2024 - so it's long range planning].
