BazAl Posted July 13, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2023 Good Afternoon. In August @Celebrity Millennium. Port: Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway/Haines, Icy Strait Point Looking for Alaskan Made Souvenirs - Not sure what my budget is. Not trinkets made elsewhere (though I do collect cups/spoon so that may be made in a foreign location). Any souvenirs or shop recommendations in these ports. Open to any suggestions - I won't know what's out there unless someone tells ya. Thanks!!
AKStafford Posted July 13, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 13, 2023 If you want to ensure the item is made in Alaska, look for the official "Made in Alaska" logo. https://www.facebook.com/buythebear If you want to ensure an item was made by an Alaska Native, look for the Silver Hand logo: https://arts.alaska.gov/silverhand
dd57 Posted July 13, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 13, 2023 If you have enough space in your checked luggage coming home, ulu knives are pretty great for chopping vegetables, nuts, etc. They are sold in many shops in Alaska. http://www.theulufactory.com/
Northern Aurora Posted July 13, 2023 #4 Share Posted July 13, 2023 In Juneau check the Sealaska Heritage Institute gift shop. In ISP there is a lovely shop at the end of the old cannery complex which has interesting jewelry and bent wood boxes. Also in the past there has also been a shop which sells locally made lotions and soaps prepared in Tlingit fashion.

It has lots of both Chinese and Alaska-made items. If you venture upstairs where the locals shop, you will find outfitting gear. After a sale, customers receive the largest, orange, shopping shoulder bag I have ever seen.
WNY10 Posted Monday at 02:35 PM #6 Share Posted Monday at 02:35 PM A lot of posts mention the ulu knives, of course to put in your checked luggage. I haven't cruised in a while, but I remember going through the metal detector to reboard the ship. How does bringing this knife back the ship happen? They are not inexpensive but come in various sizes and priced accordingly.. You should be able to see examples of these online if you search something like "Alaska Native Carvings" or similar and doing that you would know ahead of time if these would interest you or not. I like buying ulu knives as gifts and they are sold on most cruise Alaska ships. It is my experience that cutting instruments are allowed through Ship Security screening if they do not have sharp points (medical scissors and ulu knives). peety3 Posted Monday at 06:23 PM #10 Share Posted Monday at 06:23 PM On the topic of ulu knives, we bought one in 2010, and I highly recommend shopping for a knife and bowl set. Ours is a butcher block square (with rounded corners): a bowl on one side roughly the correct curvature to match the knife, and a cutout on the back side with magnets glued in so the knife stores with the bowl.
