Lisbon - Belem and Monument of the Discoveries.

Sailing on P and O Iona to Canaries and Lisbon. Not sure where we dock in Lisbon does any body know? The real question is it an easy walk from the cruise port to Belem and the Monument of the Discoveries? We are hikers / mountain bikers so fitness is not an issue.

It is quite a distance.  We took the local train or you can take a bus which was approx 1/2 hr..

The cruise port is about five miles from Belem so quite a hike. The tower, monument and monastery are all worth a trip, although personally I would take a cab!
 

The port is close to the centre including Alfama, the old town, and the castle all of which is very easily walkable from the port, although it is pretty hilly.

No it is not unless you want to walk a few miles there (and back again plus walking in the area too)Tram or bus will take you all the way to Belem. Both are frequent and inexpensive. Info on using public transport in Lisbon can be found online.  Or take a taxi. there are actually several sights/attractions at Belem so you may want to look at these to see if any appeal. Lots of online info for Belem.  The local official LISBON TOURIST INFORMATION website is actually excellent for Lisbon in general  and I suggest you start there.  It also explains public transport.

During our 3 days pre cruise in Lisbon, we made extensive use of the Tuk-Tuks which are readily available and far more fun than taxi. Although we initially took a cab from our Hotel, the Corinthia, to the Monastery for an pleasant tour, it was a very easy walk across the street [undergournd to avoid the trams], to see the Discovery Monument and later walk along the waterfront to the Tower of Belem. From there, we got on one of the Tuk-Tuks that were lined up along the curb, and followed the waterfront toward the Alfama where we continued to explore the old city - and it was quite an uphill hike, but worth it. Out Tuck-Tuk driver too pictures of us [group of 4] and narrated sites along the route.

As a cruise stop you have limited time so hiking isn't an option. Take an Uber from the port to Belem, it'll cost less than €10 and enjoy the sites of Belem, don't forget the monastery across the street. After Belem take an Uber to the Castelo de Sao Jorge, similar cost again, to enjoy the view across Lisbon and the historic castle. You'll enjoy the walk downhill towards the sights in the city centre and onwards towards your ship.

Lisbon has a great metro system. Since it is such a hilly town its worth getting a day pass. There is a 24-hour pass that is valid from the time of first use for 6.40 euros. It can be used on Metro and Carris (local buses, trams, and funiculars). 

·       When you get off the ship Terrio da Paca metro stop is an easy walk away…or continue the walk along to waterfront to Cais do Sodre

From the square at Cais do Sodre youc an find bus, tram, tuk-tuk  and train options for trip to Belem.
