Not sure how you saw it that way, because I see over 20 open seats in J Class for that AA flight (Nov 7).  There is also 20 seats on the QF flight.  Although the OP did not state a true situation in Post #1, my guess is he bought tickets from AA on the QF flight.  So, your next thought is correct in that it needs to be AA who sells the upgrade prior to Nov 7 and then IDK if he has any chance on day of flight with QF.  If the flight booking has his personal info and AAdvantage Member Number, AA website should be offering upgrade if he is eligible.  Anyway, I hope he can figure this out because I think naivety is getting in the way of an answer or solution.

 

IDK what I saw on AA, checked again, and there are plenty of business class seats open.
