edq Posted November 29, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2023 We have sailed Holland America many times but not the Koningsdam. One of our favourites cruise things is sitting on a recliner on the promenade deck with a good book and watching the ocean go by. We heard that the Koningsdam does not have a “proper” (as it was described to us) promenade deck. It was unclear as to whether there is a promenade deck at all for sitting or whether there is one but the view of the ocean has been blocked by lifeboats. Has anyone been on Koningsdam that could enlighten us. If there is no sitting on the promenade deck is there an outdoor place that is shady and quiet with a view of the ocean that would be similar? Thanks.

Thanks. There are no chairs or loungers on the Promenade. It is a full circle walking track, though! It appears that the Panorama Deck (10) has loungers looking out to sea (through glass or lucite windows) with their backs to the backs of the half-circle sofas that overlook the Lido pool. The photos on cruisedeckplans.com show a roof for shade. Do not know how quiet you will find it at the area is open to the pool and adjacent to New York Pizza & Deli, and the Panorama Bar... ETA: there are also loungers on Sun Deck (11) mid and aft -- but no shade. Edited November 29, 2023 by crystalspin

Thanks. On all 3 pinnacle class ships the promenade deck is too narrow for chairs. In fact in some areas it is almost too narrow for 2 people to walk side by side. There is a couple areas where they have the wooden benches with the ships name. The only place with shade for sitting outside is the lido pool area and the sea view pool but those areas are not quiet. There is the "balcony" deck above the lido pool deck with shade which is a little quieter than down my the pool. If you want to side out on the promenade deck in a lounger you need to stay away from the pinnacle class ships. BTW - we were on the Eurodam in October and they are replacing some of older wooden desk chairs with the metal/Web style.
edq Posted November 29, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted November 29, 2023 Thanks for your quick responses. That is sort of what we were afraid of. It’s disappointing for us as we are not pool/activity people and just love quiet time with the ocean - but not so high up that you can’t appreciate the waves or being sunburnt or windblown. Sorry to hear that they are replacing the wooden chairs too. Those were one of the old familiar Holland America things we looked forward to.

The narrow deck and lack of loungers are some of the disappointing changes on Pinnacle ships (along with the tenders blocking the view). Here is what the new loungers look like on Eurodam, also disappointing compared to the teak look, but at least they have them.
edq Posted November 30, 2023 Author #6 Share Posted November 30, 2023 That’s too bad but at least they have loungers that have a view of the ocean. We should check itineraries for the European and that class of their ships.

I’m sorry to see them go also, but HAL has not been doing a good job of maintaining them. They were pretty weathered on Veendam in 2015. (I so wanted to spend quality time with them applying teak oil. They were so dry then.) I understand they are a lot of work for staff, but they are also pretty expensive pieces of nautical furniture.
