jerseygirlinAZ Posted February 5 #1 Share Posted February 5 We are cruising out of Dover this summer. Hoping to get a taxi in Dublin, but have an eight-year old who needs a car seat (at least here in the U.S.) Anyone have any experience with how things work in Ireland and England with car/booster seats? Rare John Bull Posted February 5 #2 Share Posted February 5 The law on seat belts and booster seats in the UK is quite complicated, so I'll stick to @jerseygirlinAZ's specific circumstances. Her eight-year-old can travel in a taxi without a booster seat but must be in a rear seat and must wear a seatbelt. Failure to do so means that the driver, not the child or parent, has broken the law and can be prosecuted / fined. So taxi drivers tend to be pretty clued up. Same law in Northern Ireland (and Scotland & Wales) but might be different in the Republic of Ireland. As @Harters's post, taxis don't tend to carry booster seats. Rare VMax1700 Posted February 5 #3 Share Posted February 5 Much the same in Ireland. Based on EU regulations..... legislation in relation to taxi drivers is governed by the European Commission’s (compulsory use of seatbelts and child restraint systems in motor vehicles) regulations 2006, which allows for exemptions. The regulations for taxi drivers stipulate that an infant who is under three years of age can be carried on a back seat by an adult as long as that adult is wearing a seatbelt, usually around the child. A child more than three years of age does not need to be in a car seat if travelling in a taxi, but they must wear a seatbelt and not be in the passenger seat.
