Warnemunde and Rostock on a Sunday in August

Recommended Posts

We are going to be docking in Warnemunde on a Sunday in August -

We are interested in spending our day in Rostock and Warnemunde....are shops and restaurants open on Sundays?

We prefer to go by private car as opposed to train or bus....Is it easy for private transfers to pick up at the dock? Is it an easy walk from Warnemunde to the ship? TIA

Warnemunde is an easy walking area. We spent part of the Sunday we were there walking

the beach, enjoying all the families there and wandering the town. A “typical” beach town, lots of shops selling ice cream, etc. looked as though we had been transported back to the 1950s. Rostock is a fascinating town…we had a guided tour and then wandered on our own. Easy trip back to Warnemunde.

In Rostock all shops and the many restaurants will be closed. My daughter is on a year abroad there and says Sundays are so quiet. there’s a shopping centre which opens every fourth Sunday. When we visited her we found it was tricky to get a coffee on a Sunday other than a local chain of bakeries called Junge die Baeckerei. However with it being so quiet, it does mean you get a great view of all the different historical buildings in the town centre. So still worth the trip. I see you prefer private car but the train into Rostock could not be easier.

As Warnemuende is a holiday resort\ seaside town, more will be open there. It can feel busy at weekends at the best of times without cruise passengers, so can’t imagine what it would be like with a ship in port. You might enjoy the respite a trip to Rostock on a Sunday would provide.

It is only a few hundred yards from the ship which will usually dock next to the train station. You only need walk through the train station, cross the bridge  and you are there.

Note that, as Warnemunde is a suburb of Rostock, you could have a very pleasant and easy day visiting both, by  travelling the short distance into Rostock by train.Once there, go down to street level and take a tram along to the mostly pedestrianised centre as this will save having to take a longish walk along and back again.  Including two trams, you might want to consider buying a day ticket as you will have four rides on transport and won't need to look for change or machines each time. Note that on first use at the train station in Warnemunde, you must validate your day ticket in a machine before boarding or you risk a fine. With a day ticket you only need validate one time. Without a day ticket you will need to validate each ticket whenever you use it.

Lots of online info  for both Rostock and Warnemunde to help you decide which sights you might want to visit in Rostock, also train and tram info.

Some past threads you might want to browse for ideas:

Trivia.  In Germany, Sundays are legally designated days of rest and quiet, so you won't hear anyone using nosy machinery or any tools which would constitute "noise", and most shops will be closed.
