Anchorage to Whittier

Hello! We are flying in a couple of days prior to our cruise and, thus, cannot use the cruise line transfer service. Does anyone have advice on getting to the port the day of sailing? I've been told that a rental car is not a great option, although we will have one during our stay the 2-3 days prior. Thank you for any help you are able to give!

What cruiseline are you on? Why can't you book a cruiseline transfer? We are on Princess and we fly into Vancouver on the 12th of July and we are taking a Princess transfer from the airport to the pier on the 13th.

A couple of options

Lowest I found:  https://alaskacruisetransfer.com/rates/

More expensive:  https://www.salmonberrytours.com/tour/anchorage-to-whittier-transfer-and-tour/

By train!:  https://www.alaskarailroad.com/

Additional:  https://www.anchorage.net/plan-your-trip/transportation/cruise-transfers/?view=grid&sort=qualityScore&bounds=false

Lots of options depending on what you want.   I am doing the Salmon Berry one to visit some sites on the way to the ship.

Salmon Berry doesn’t run the full cruise ship season sadly. I wanted to try them out after hearing so many good things on CC but my cruise is too late in the season for them.

We are on Holland and my agent said that we can only use the cruise transfer if we arrive that day (which, especially from the east coast, would be insanity) or have booked a hotel package. We are planning on getting in on the 20th or 21st of June. We sail the 23rd. The packages are pricey and also waitlisted.

@SirTomster, thank you for you excellent suggestions!

This is weird.  I have a HAL cruise in June.  We are arriving 2 days before to do some exploring before the cruise.  None of which is through the HAL.  But when I log in I can book an Airport Transfer.  Anchorage to Whittier.  It was under Flights and Planning, but it was there.

But it is $69.00 pp.  Shoot.  ACT Bus is cheaper by $20 pp.    If you just want a transfer.

I think your travel agent has HAL mixed up with Viking.  Since you’re renting a car, just book the airport transfer, return the car, and walk over to one of the HAL agents at arrivals to check in.

can anyone recommend a pre cruise hotel in Anchorage that has shuttle service to the train station?

Fairfield MIGHT have a shuttle. When we stayed there the shuttle was booked for someone who had a special package and so everyone staying there got to enjoy the shuttle for free. We only stayed there for 4 hours since our flights were late coming in but it was a good experience and an amazing shuttle driver. The same driver picked us up from the airport and was the one to bring us to the train hours later.

Your travel agent is incorrect. You can go back to the airport and get the transfer. It needs to be booked in advance.

You can also book the train through Alaska RR. It will arrive early enough to do 26 Glacier Tour before your cruise.
