CruisingSarah Posted April 3 #1 Share Posted April 3 It's a long time since I was last in Livorno but I remember going DIY on the train pretty easily to Pisa for a few hours. Is it still easy to do this or to go to Florence? Or could anyone suggest any other straightforward DIY options perhaps for something different? I've ventured independently at many ports in the past but my travelling partner this time round is a bit nervous about travelling independently of the ship's excursions. Thanks for any ideas. euro cruiser Posted April 3 #2 Share Posted April 3 Pisa and Lucca are very easy to reach by train from Livorno. Florence is also straightforward, though it takes longer. If you and your travel partner don't have a strong desire to go to Florence, Lucca, or a combination of Pisa and Lucca, is a great option.

Thank you! That's helpful! Might try Lucca as never been and have been to the others before.
euro cruiser Posted April 3 #4 Share Posted April 3 Here is the Lucca tourism web site, maybe it will give you some ideas: Home Page | Turismo Lucca If you're up for it, renting a bike to ride atop the city walls is a lot of fun.
2BACRUISER Posted April 30 #5 Share Posted April 30 We actually spent a day in Livorno itself as we've done Tuscany to death. We took a canal boat tour, then visited the fish and indoor markets, we went to the park. We did use the ho-ho bus which took us up to the finicular tram. Away from the commercial port Livorno sea front is paved in black and white squares and quite pretty. HTH

Another vote for pretty Lucca. Easy to reach, compact but lots to see, and much more relaxing than a long frenetic day trying to "do" Florence. The walled historic city is very close to the train station. Exit station on to main road, look for the entrance gate to the old walled city, which should be slightly to your left if I remember correctly, and you are there. Even should you not rent bicycles, do at least walk around the walls as you are looking down into the historic area. Also from what's already been said above, don't miss the Aqueduct of Nottolini. See it before you walk towards the city centre, as it's close to the station and just outside the city walls. Also climb either the Guinigi Tower or the Clock Tower for great views of the city walls. The cathedral also has a bell tower (but shorter). I did a DIY excursion there and if you're interested, here's the link to my blog post: https://diycruiseports.com/diy-port-guides/lucca-tuscany-day-trip-livorno-cruise

Only now noticed that i should have pointed out tha, having once exited the station to the main road, it is necessary to cross that road to enter the historic walled section of Lucca.
