NCL Escape: Is this a cruise ship or a floating casino?

You might be right, but if itinerary was the driving factor, then carping about the casino size is even less relevant. Itinerary should be the driving factor.

That might be a bit dramatic, no? Looking at the deck plans you referenced, and only considering the passenger accessible areas, the theater takes up 23.5% of the space, O'Sheehans takes 19%, the casino takes 33.5%, and the Manhattan room takes 24%. So the casino (sky bar included) takes slightly more then a third of the deck...I don't know if 1/3rd counts as "almost the entire 7th floor".

1. The itinerary was on the Mediterranean, Rome to Barcelona.
2. Please read carefully my message above, I explained that I was referring to the walking/socializing area between the elevators. The theatre and Manhattan are outside this area.

Yeah... I don't gamble and I don't like smoke. So far I haven't had any problem avoiding smoke on different ships, and on my upcoming Escape cruise I'm pretty confident I can avoid going through the casino if there is too much smoke. There is a forward elevator to use for the theather/O'Sheehan's and an aft one to use for Manhattan room. (Even if I don't gamble myself I don't mind the casino taking up space. I kind of like walking through it unless there's a lot of smoke.)

I understand what you mean. 🙂

Hmmm.....I have sailed NCL, Carnival, MSC, Celebrity, HAL and Royal...on multiple ships.  All had a casino.  All the casinos were decent sized.

So, to answer the OP's question, YES, part of it is a floating casino.  The ships are also floating buffets (which are also sizable on cruise ships).  There are also floating sun decks, and floating theaters, and many floating bars, etc.

There are lots of things to do on a cruise ship.  Casino being just one of them.

I think Disney cruises do not have a casino.  Might want to check into their cruises.

Overall, Europe has a higher smoking percentage of the populace than does the U.S.  So, given the OP is from Europe, their cruises will likely have more smoking than those that sail from the U.S.

Take a look at the deck plan on NCL website: https://www.ncl.com/fr/en/cruise-ship/escape/deck-plans
The casino is shown to occupy only a small area on the side, across the Skyline bar, but in fact it goes all the way from Manhattan to O'Sheehan's, and Skyline is a part of it (they even have poker machines at all the bar chairs in Skyline).

Yes, the deck plans show an open area along most of the ship marked as Casino. It made sense when I look  at it.

Here's a crazy thought: Itinerary? 😉

Then don't complain about the ship itself.

I personally hate the Epic, after the first time I sailed on it, I said never again. Then it came out with the amazing Southern Caribbean route so I did it again. Still hated the ship, but loved the cruise.

I hear you. I'm not particularly fond of Star, but she has great (for me) Itineraries. So I do the best of it. Focus on the things I like and somehow end up having a great time.

I'm sure you're sensitive to smoke, lots of people are, but there's no such thing as an allergy to smoke, medically-speaking.

I didn't click on the links. Don't need to. I'm living proof that smoke triggers my (and Mrs. Schmoopie's) asthma. Whatever is in cigarette smoke, it has the effect of closing up my breathing passageways and it has the feeling of severe shortness of breath and/or suffocating.

Maybe I'm an anamoly (Mrs. Schmoopie, too). Maybe we should get inflatable plastic bubbles in which we can be encased on our next cruise. On second thought, it's probably hard to breathe inside one of those, too.

As for casinos (the original topic)...absolutely no problem with them. If people want to lose money, (and I've lost my share)...at least that doesn't impact others walking through (or even in the general vicinity of) the casino.

So when you claim that the casino takes up most of the deck, you justify that claim by qualifing it with "if you only consider the casino itself..."?

Well, heck, if you only consider the area aft of the elevators, the Manhattan room takes up the whole deck! 🙄
