WhatsApp vs Royal app for onboard texting

For people who do NOT have the Internet package.

 

Could anyone explain if they recommend one over the other? For reliability in receiving alerts, messages going through, etc.

 

Only asking for communication between people onboard, not concerned about messaging home.

If you don't have the internet package WhatsApp won't work.

For non internet onboard communications the Android & IOS mobile royal application is your only choice.  Everyone in your party should download the application prior while you have an internet connection.  While on ship WIFI, there is a chat portion that allows texting others through the application.  Be advised that receipt of texts does NOT produce an audio sound notification of any type.  You'll check your device regularly.  In my recent cruise surveys, I've began requesting priority for this minor code implementation. I'll also begin to make google play store commentary for the developers.  Ship IT Managers have indicated the squeakiest wheel  gets the oil.  Hope this helps!

I've seen others discussing WhatsApp and iMessage working even with no Internet package. But maybe it's not a sure thing.

I think that may have been a loophole a few years back, but not anymore.
