edinburgher Posted June 22 #1 Share Posted June 22 (edited) The Mayor of Barcelona has announced that ALL tourist accommodation in the urban area in tourist apartments, VRBOs, Air BnBs etc are to have their licenses revoked BY 2028 due to the shortage and affordability of rentals for local residents. Apparently there are currently around 10,000 licenses in place. As the word "BY" has been used, it means it is currently unclear what the actual date will be. Maybe best to book only actual hotels until more is known. There is much info on this to be found online. slidergirl Posted June 28 #2 Share Posted June 28 It's not just Barcelona that is starting to ban/restrict nightly rentals. Too many owners are switching from rental housing to the nightly scheme. It's true that it makes it difficult/impossible for local to find a place to live.
Podie Posted July 16 #3 Share Posted July 16 This is what has happened in Sedona, AZ, where I live. There are no rentals available for people who work there because of all the short term rentals.
Rare Vineyard View Posted July 16 #4 Share Posted July 16 I believe that, as slidergirl said, I do doubt that this is going to dissipate. It is happening in many areas and not just Europe, to Podi’s point. (We love Sedona) Even where we live, while not to the extreme we are reading elsewhere, ‘wine country’ VRBO rentals are a topic of supply and demand for locals who are looking for year round rentals. There is an argument to be made. Thank you for this information Edinburgher. It is important to note. This is in fact an official act, and should be noted. 2
