The Secrets of the Haven VIP Experience in 2024 and beyond

Recommended Posts

Gary, you have informed a vast number of cruisers.  I recall having back and forth discussion on the Haven before your 2019 piece came out.

Our entry into the Haven was slightly different.  We have a kid with food allergies.  Our first NCL cruise, we picked the Haven because we thought it would be easier to navigate those allergies in a setting where there were fewer passengers.  Dealing with food allergies in the Haven has been one of its greatest perks for us.  Not that NCL has issues with allergies, they don't.  They are quite good at it.  But the Haven has always taken it to the next level.  But thats a whole different post.

Beside the food issue, the main reason we like the Haven is that on a Mass Market ships, we want a place to escape the crowd madness.  We think The Haven is aptly named in this regard.  We like the quiet it affords.  Thats it.  Everything else is gravy.  That said, kids are aging out and we have a different perspectives on life and what we want.

We like the smaller ships that cater to folks that do a lot of travel.  We have been sailing on Oceania and Seabourn (expedition only) and are very happy with those products.

If we are cruising in a large group or with kids, we'll do the Haven.  If its just us and other couples....well, we'll mess around with NCL's sister and not feel bad about it.  Pick the product that best meets your needs.  We gave up on loyalty programs a long time ago.  If we get something extra, great, but we never use loyalty programs to decide what line we cruise on.

In addition to the Haven, we have sailed MSC YC, NCCL Star Class, Celebrity Retreat.   All things being equal, we would pick the Haven every time.

For all the deep dives and info you shared, thank you Gary  You are appreciated.

The Haven isn't off our list necessarily, but it's no longer our go-to choice.  That sounds like it's true for you, Gary, and undoubtedly true for many other cruisers who are dismayed by NCL's less bang for the buck.

It's a pity, because our 2022 haven cruise hit that sweet spot:  precisely enough pampering and luxury for the amount of money charged.

So what will you do when you find that all cruise lines have decreased in quality while increasing prices?

website received a multitude of complaints on its shrinking egg, the company replied that it hadn't changed the size of the egg, that the commenters' memories were faulty, probably because they had been children when they had first come across the Cadbury Egg when they would've seemed bigger.

Then, a Cadbury fan sent the company a photo of the current Cadbury Egg side by side with one from five years earlier which he had kept in his freezer for that time.  The current egg was clearly two-thirds the size of the previous one.  This forced the Cadbury people to issue a quick mea culpa, in which it uncomfortably admitted, yes, the eggs were smaller now.  Cited were the usual demons of higher costs in production, goods, and so forth.

@CDR Benson First hello my friend.  A short story.  When I was a child, the "Special Candy Bar" we got maybe once a year, was a Cadbury bar.  Single mom, two jobs yet we never felt poor.  As an adult, one day I saw Cadbury.  The same bar with raisins and nuts my mom bought when I was a kid.  Yes the size was smaller.  The real issue was the quality, consistency and taste. It tasted like wax is the best way to describe it.  I wrote a letter, they said emphatically the formula has never changed. Then send me a coupon for some free bars which I tossed.  I hate being lied too.  Funny how my actual experience relates to your post.

Last year, we cruised with Regent Seven Seas.  That was a nicer experience than the Haven in many ways, and in ways, it wasn't.  I'm taking a hard look at MSC's Yacht Club for our next cruise,

I read your review and posts on RSSC.  I fully understood your very well written and balanced review. RSSC has been my Bucket List cruise for a very long time.  Then, I started to see a trend of cruisers expressing dissatisfaction in the cruise, service, food, brand and experience.  Never big things, just little things that took away from their past, current and future expectations.  Add to this, the investment of RSSC is much higher then most cruises although sometime you can catch a deal.

My next cruise is on the new Luxury Brand created by MSC.  The brand is "Explora Journey".  I am taking my older sister with me.  It is categorized as a luxury cruise experience.  They are one year old and getting their sea legs.  My study tells me they are worth a try based on what is important to me on my cruise experiences.  For my sister, it is her first and last cruise.  Another consideration for you and the Mrs.

I also LOVED the Joy Haven.  The best experience on a NCL ship, and in the Haven of all of my experiences. What a great time.  When I don't want a Big Mega Ship Experience, like going to the Mediterranean, I choose a smaller ship, older clientele, much less children, and due to size can get into smaller ports. For that type of trip, I have gone on Oceania Cruises in 2023 and will do it again in 2025.  Oceania like RSSC is a sister brand of NCL of course.

The bottom line, I still and will always love the NCL Haven.  I will sail them again.  Cruise are in many ways what you make of them.  Sometimes as this tread has shown, you have to try other brands to see what you have or what you are missing.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

Obviously, go with the cruise and cruise line that provides the best experience for my dollar.

The point of my post wasn't to describe a search for a cruise line which doesn't lower quality + raise price.  As you pointed out, it occurs by all, eventually.

The point of my post was that NCL was no longer our default selection with whom to sail.  For our next cruise, instead of automatically choosing the Haven, we will look for the line which offers the best deal for our buck.

Increasing prices is the norm, unless we are in a deflationary period.  We have been upgrading (paying more) our cruise experience in part due to quality of service.  As a result we have seen increases in quality.  It serves as a reminder you get what you pay for.

Here is what we did when we addressed the situation you described.

1.  Adjust expectations to the current situation.  Tough to do, but a game changer when it happens.

2.  If unwilling or unable to adjust expectations.  Dig deeper and pay to increase the quality of your vacation.  For us, that meant trying other products.

Maybe there are other ways, but we used and continue to use these two methods and we are fairly happy with the results.

36 days out from our upcoming Haven experience on Breakaway (first time on this ship).  We received luggage tags today in the mail with information for any pre-concierge requests. Based on our experience last year and some posts made, we’re listing requests in the butler letter.

With “reasonable expectations” in mind, we’re looking forward to a wonderful cruise!

Tried to submit this already so hopefully it's not a duplicate.  My family and I travelled on the Joy Haven twice now and really enjoyed it each time.  My family includes my 6 year old grandson.  My concern is the future Bermuda cruises moving to the new Aqua ship.  My understanding from our NCL personal cruise consultant is that the Haven pool deck (which is outside now) is only for ages 16+.  This seems contrary to all the family style rooms they have in the Haven.  If I can't have my family with me in the Haven I might have to look elsewhere for the next cruise.  My cruise consultant told me that I can try and see if anyone complains but that is a lot of money to risk to have someone complain and ruin our week.  Does anyone have any information on this policy and if there is a chance they might relax it?  Thank you.

The Haven pool deck (on deck 16) is available to all Haven guests. It is the Haven Sun deck (deck 17) that is restricted to those 16 and above. We saw (and enjoyed watching) youngsters in the infinity pool.

From NCL's deck plans: Aft for deck 16

Your NCL PCC is wrong. The pool on any Norwegian ship in the Haven is for all ages. They are likely referring to the sun deck. On Pr1ma, V!va, and Aqua the first floor of the open space is open to all. This includes the pool. The second floor (deck, I know) has hot tubs and is considered the 16+ sundeck.

Thank you GALSews for your comments.  Can you tell me if you were actually on the Aqua or one of the other Prima class ships?  I would hope they didn't change the policy for the Aqua.

Cruiseny4life, thank you and that makes sense to me given how the Joy was set up.  Part of the confusion I think is that they are labelling the deck 16 as the Haven sun deck as well as the sun deck on 17.  So the snapshot you provided could possibly apply to deck 16 as well since they are both called haven sun deck.

Just a question to those familiar with the Joy Haven experience.  Part of the Suite/Haven experience on the Pearl was a designated area in the theater for those customers.  Is that the same for the Joy? If so, that will make our show planning a little more relaxed.  Thanks.

We have been loyal NCL cruisers for many years.  It used to be good value for the money.  We loved the Dawn when it home ported in NYC, and then the Gem when it replaced her.  Our first experience in a “true” Haven, with its own restaurant, bar & lounge, hooked us into only booking Haven cabins (exception was the fantastic Garden Villa on the Dawn, but that’s another story).

Itineraries and price are forcing us to look at other lines.  NCL seems to reserve the itineraries that interest us for their older non-Haven ships, and there aren’t any more 14-day cruises from NYC.  Despite booking early, when cabin prices are generally lowest, Haven prices are now so high we’re looking for the Haven concept elsewhere. We don’t know if another line can compete with the Haven experience, but are willing to find out!

Our Latitude status did influence our choice to try MSC’s Yacht Club — Ambassador on NCL matched Diamond on MSC.  We wanted a cruise from Copenhagen next year, while staying with friends there, and MSC’s Euribia has a 7-day r/t.  NCL doesn’t have a Haven ship there.

We also like that, besides being less expensive than NCL, the YC has free WiFi; minibar and premium extra drinks package, including water and soda (with no added gratuities); and comp access to thermal area.  Daily service charge is $15.50/day, compared to $25/day in the Haven.  Down payments to book YC suites are 1/3 to 1/2 less than NCL, and final payments are 3, not 4, months out.

YC members also have access to a private beach area and restaurant on MSC’s Ocean Cay in the Caribbean, so we cancelled an NCL cruise next November/December, and booked the MSC Meraviglia in a Duplex YC cabin for ourselves and my DS.  We gave up a 12-day cruise for only 7 days, but it’s just after Thanksgiving, so that’s ok.

We still have 2 NCL Haven cruises booked.  Looking forward to sailing on the Prima for the first time this November, and our Danish friends are joining us on the Breakaway in February 2026.  It will be interesting to compare the Haven with the YC.  Sailing an Italian line will also be new to us.  We do hope to temper our expectations and just enjoy the differences each brings.

Please come back to the NCL board and do a comparison after you sail. I’m curious about your Meraviglia cruise.

Haven guests, regardless of what ship they are on, are escorted to the theater ahead of times.  At least that’s always been our experience.  And usually, you’re the first in the theatre, so you can choose to sit elsewhere if the reserved seats aren’t to your liking.  Haven reserved seats are held until 10 minutes before showtime.

We were on the Joy in May.  The Concierge requested that we show up in the Haven lounge a half hour before showtime, to be escorted down.

Though I’ve never written a cruise review, I’m planning on doing what you suggest.  I know I would be interested😁.

It’s tough, being so loyal to NCL for so long, but Jim and I both felt the vibe was different after Kevin Sheehan departed.  It was always about revenue, but now in a more obvious way.

We were not escorted down- as we were in a suite on the Pearl.  We just showed up and met the concierge and were directed to a plethora of open gallery seating. This time we are in a Haven aft away from the Haven lounge area so presumably we will get instructions on how to navigate this when we talk to the concierge.

We were just on the Joy a couple of weeks ago.  There is a Haven section in the theater indicated with tan slip covers over the seats.  I have heard that if it's very crowded they will give up those seat to non Haven folks once the show is about to start.

@CDR Benson Despite reading the mixed reviews, we have booked RSSC for late 2026 after a mixed Haven experience on the Prima last year and an upcoming Haven cruise on Breakaway this Fall.

I would be grateful if you could direct me to your RSSC review that @Sthrngary mentioned in his comment #53.  I’d like to see your perspective on RSSC in more detail.

Thank you.

Not a problem, sir.  Here's the link to my review:

At the time, according to other posters on the RSSC threads, Mariner was experiencing difficulties with its plumbing system, resulting in toilet-flushing difficulties and unpleasant bilge odours wafting about the ship.  Posters who had taken cruises on Mariner just before and after ours reported these situations.  However, on our cruise, we did not experience these things personally, nor did we hear anyone else complain of such.  Mayhap, we were just lucky.

The other ships in RSSC's fleet do not seem to be experiencing these kind of problems.  If you are sailing on Mariner, you'll probably get more up-to-date information on the RSSC threads.

Hope this helps, sir.

(Incidentally, I cannot help but take especial note of your screen name.  For the last few weeks, I've been binge-watching the entire run of the original (the real) Hawaii 5-O on Roku.  I'm up to season eight.  I had forgotten how good a show it was, especially in the first few seasons before Leonard Freeman died.)

I ended up cancelling my Haven booking on Epic and making the jump to Explora Journeys (MSC's luxury brand) for the same reasons. We did a YC cruise last year and liked the YC area and experience but didn't care for the environment on the rest of the ship. Explora Journeys is supposed to be more like an all-YC environment on a smaller luxury ship.

Back to Haven. My cruise in an aft Haven cabin felt pretty pricy for an older ship.  While I was excited to try the Haven product, I was concerned about being so far from the Haven amenities. In order to bump up to the Haven proper area, the price jumped quite a bit as well (Haven is already pretty full for that cruise). We loved having the minibar in the YC stocked with our favorite beverages (no charge) and not having to pay for bottled water if we wanted it - it just felt like a lot of extra charges by NCL, that in my mind, having been spoiled in YC, should be included in the Haven product.  If DH wants a soda (he drinks several a day) it would mean schlepping to the Haven lounge or waiting for a butler to bring it.  I priced similar itineraries on Explora and Retreat cruises on two of the E-class ships, and they all came in cheaper than my Haven cruise.  I considered The Retreat because that's on my list to try as well but was concerned that the pool areas looks small when compared to the large pool areas in the "Sea" class YC's and compared to Explora, which has several pool areas.  In the end we decided to try a jump to a luxury line and see if we like that product.

I will still keep Haven on my list and appreciate all the info shared in this thread!

@momofmab I also have an Explora Journey cruise booked for February 2025.  The reason is similar to yours.  I wanted the same treatment on the entire ship.  When in the Retreat, Haven or Yacht Club; we are mostly all treated like Rock Stars.  When we leave, not so much and extremely crowded.  When I was a young person, those crowds were fun and I looked forward to the crazy deck parties.  As I go older, half filled lounges with Karaoke took the place, LOL.

Your jump is a transition to what would make your future cruise experience better.  Some of the items you like are included.  Some items you did not like are eliminated.  However, there is still give and take.  Like everything in our world, perfection is never really the end game where enhanced or improvement can be achieved.

Back to the NCL Haven.  My heart will always be in the Haven.  It was my first experience at eliminating the part of cruising that was taking away from my enjoyment.  Whether the Haven Spa Suite on the Getaway or the H2 Haven Deluxe Owners Suite on the NCL Joy.  All my experiences were lovely and I finally got to share the Haven with my Adult children on the Joy.  Great memories and unforgettable family time.

All cruise companies are looking for the Hot Spot to attract new segments of cruisers or old timers like myself. It seems, to my liking, that creating a Luxury Category that currently is within budget range is the trend.  Like everything, I don't think this trend will before ever so let us all enjoy it while it is here.  Options are so important with enhancing cruise experiences.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

We priced out a Silversea (16 day) and Haven (15 day) Panama Canal later this year and the cost came out almost the same.

But we booked Haven anyway since the Silversea sailing ends up in Lima during rainy season, so Machu Picchu would not be any good.

First time on NCL so we'll see how we like it.  And I appreciate all these threads started by @Sthrngary--good, concentrated source of info about the Haven experience.
