Bidding for Upgrades

We got an email from O yesterday offering us a bid option on an upcoming cruise.

 

Unlikely that we’ll get it, as the cabins offered are all waitlisted.

I'm curious how the whole thing works.  Obviously it depends upon what their inventory is.  But for those who have received offers to bid, were you invited to bid on a particular room/suite category, or multiple categories?  And can you raise the bid later?  And when do you find out if you're the winner?

I like this development.  I'm all for anything that adds options for consumers.

 

I've never used the bidding process for a cruise, but I have been successful upgrading to the "big front seat" on Spirit flights (often for less than reserving a window seat in the back).

Again, no bidding for my cruise, but a few months before it, my TA tells me that it's only $150 pp to move from inside to ocean view, guaranteed.  For 11 days, we'll probably do it. 

 

I know, from steerage to steerage plus.  My standards are well below most here.

Has anyone considered that the waitlisted rooms are on purpose in order to test out the new bidding process?
