Nieuwcruiser Posted March 29, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Please share your "must do" excursions on any of the islands. We're a group of 6 45-50 year olds looking for some ideas.
Irishwhiskey Posted March 30, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Your still in the USA.It is so easy to get around the islands. You will be able to see much more than you would if you were to take the ships excursion. It cost me thirty dollars for the four of us when we went last year for the day. bobnsandi Posted March 30, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Please share your "must do" excursions on any of the islands. We're a group of 6 45-50 year olds looking for some ideas. A quick list: Oahu: Pearl Harbor Bishop Museum Hawai'i (big island): Volcanoes National Park Kohala Coast Kaua'i: "Grand Canyon" Maui (our home): Haleakala at sunrise Iao Valley And too many others to list. beachchick Posted March 30, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 30, 2006 Agreed that there are just too many "favorites" to possibly list them in one thread. May I suggest that you do an advanced search on this forum only for "X excursion" (X = island name) and/or specific activities, e.g., "maui snorkel." This question comes up all the time, and there is a bunch of current/recent information here. Try searching back only 1 month to start and go back further as necessary. (Tip: On the Advanced Search screen, scroll over to "Forums to Search" and click on "Hawaii" even though it will already be highlighted. For some unknown reason, this makes a difference in how effective the search is.) beachchick
Thanksforyourinfo Posted March 30, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 30, 2006 A quick list: Hawai'i (big island): Volcanoes National Park Kohala Coast Kaua'i: "Grand Canyon" I fully agree with these two. The rest depends on your interests. Many people like to do stuff in the water, others like shopping. I included snorkeling in Maui with mine. lisacas1 Posted March 30, 2006 #6 Share Posted March 30, 2006 I love Kauai, go there twice a year! Oahu - Waikiki and Pearl Harbor Maui - Lahaina, wealth of historic and cultural attractions Hilo - Mauna Kea Kauai - Princeville, Hanalei, Poipu and Waimea Canyon. They'll probably enjoy Waimea Canyon the best. Be sure to bring a jacket, the temperature drops about 10 degrees when you get to the top. Also, there's a ton of wild chickens everywhere too - beautiful!! Have fun!
loghomelover Posted April 3, 2006 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2006 Ditto on the renting a car to do things on your own. Get to see more and on your own schedule. Although you do miss the info that the tour guides will give you. One excursion we highly recommend through NCL is the Captain Zodiac snorkeling excursion. That was our favorite. Don't do the luau though NCL. Too large and commercialized. We did Volcano National Park in our rental. Did Lahaina in a rental and stopped at Maui Ocean center. Can do Fern Grotto on your own with a car rental and save $$. We did our rentals through thrifty online prior to traveling and had no problems. Also bought our tickets to Maui Ocean center online prior to traveling and didn't have to wait in a long line for tickets to get in.

Bucky3 Posted April 4, 2006 #9 Share Posted April 4, 2006 Research this board. There is lots of detailed information here. Rent a car on each of the islands with the possible exception of Honolulu - due to traffic congestion. With six of you sharing car expenses, you'll be able to go as many places as you have time for for very few $$ and do so within your own time frame. Above all else visit the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. You'll be glad you did.
yancycruiser Posted April 5, 2006 #10 Share Posted April 5, 2006 I'll be touring the islands on the Pride of Aloha in Jan 07 and then staying six days on Maui. Thanks for all the information and recommendations. I will be watching this thread closely.
