The Amerikanis Candris line

Recommended Posts

I'll have to dig out my slides to see if they are worth the effort. I've also got slides of the public rooms on the old Rotterdam. At some point I stopped taking that type of picture.

Have you been on a crossing with John Maxtone-Graham? I would think that would be a match made in heaven.

HI DEEPWATER!!!

I love slides...and the way they convert into pictures. Slides are the absolute best quality.

Funny you should mention John Maxtone Graham. JMG has always been a guiding light. I first met JMG and his wonderful wife, Mary, onboard the NORWAY in 1993. Of course I had all his books and of course we got to chat on several occasions. His lectures are the best and his first hand experiences are 2nd to none. JMG is "The Dean" of Ocean Liner History; he is a national treasure. FUNNY ONE: When I spotted JMG and Mary in the casino...at the slots. I said to him..."John!!!...what do you think your grandmother would have said about this???"...LOL!!! Needless to say...we all had a good laugh...recalling what a proper lady his grandmother had been...LOL.

Hi,

Im back to say Hello!!

Hi CGTNORMANDIE!

Id love to hear some stories about others transatlantic "Voyages"...........

I aspire to someday, after putting both kids through college to take a transatlantic crossing......anywhere :) (& LONG!!)

Still havent found the time to scan my Amerikanis pics..but now that I think about it....my DH LOVES scanning in old stuff for preservation lol.

I will take them out since I DO know where they are & I will have him scan some.

Looking fwd to hearing about the greatness of a transatlantic crossing!

(living vicarioulsy, please help!?)

I've read Liners To The Sun and The Only Way To Cross but have never had the pleasure of meeting JMG or hear him speak. My brother saw him on the first Norway crossing.

You're right, slides are the best quality, particularly in duplicating color. They are the gold standard for artists who use photos for reference in painting.

HI DIVA!!!

If you want some great memories go to "OTHER CRUISE LINES" right here on CRUISE CRITICS...and then look for SAGA ROSE GREENLAND...by SAGA RUBY. We have been having great discussions about transatlantic crossings. You can start there...then maybe some others and I can fill in with some stories for you. If you look at some of my other threads on this site you will also find some good stories about transatlantic crossings etc.

DEEPWATER is correct...try reading John Maxtone Graham's great book...'THE ONLY WAY TO CROSS"...gives you a fantastic look at the classic liners of the 20th Century.

Maybe we can start a new thread dedicated to transatlantic crossings.:D

Hi CGTNORMANDIE AND DEEPWATER!

Thanks for the suggestions...I will definitely check out the threads here first, as we're "rained-in" lol & declared a state of emergency today; so time is ample (& I LOVE IT!!)

So, How is the weather where you are in Mass? Our daughter goes to college in Amherst- long story short, she was supposed to travel to Boston today to be an xtra in a film tomorrow (kevin spacey); after a few minutes checking into the Boston weather reports online we decided to ask her to pls not go!....Wise decision??

Thanks a Bunch,

~Stacey~

CBTNORMANDIE, great idea for a transatlantic crossing thread. Crossings have always been popular with veteran cruisers but were becoming an endangered itinerary. With all the repos to Europe and back they have been rediscovered by the general cruising public. Those crossing aren't exactly like the days of old but they are a great trip none the less. With the Med being viewed by cruise line executives as the new Caribbean, there will be more and more transatlantics from which to select.

HI STACEY!!!

The weather is better here in Boston. It stopped raining around Noon. Actually...travelling to Boston right now would be pretty good. I know Amherst very well...I grew up down the road from there...and my mother actually lived there in later years.

HI DEEPWATER!!!

Looks like we will have some great pickings in the near future. I think that we can even do better than the old days. The big cabins are much cheaper than they were...only the quality of the service and ambiance has changed...although...you can still capture bits and pieces of it out there...lol.

I will start a new thread...THE ONLY WAY TO CROSS!!!:D

CruiseDivaNJ,

I lurk this forum occasionally and stumbled on this thread quite by accident; and glad that I did. Wow, your photos take me back to some very fond memories and thank you for posting them! :D Also, thanks to the other CCers who posted as it has been fun and enjoyable reading. My first two cruises were on the Chandris Line. My first cruise was on The Victoria a 14 day eastern Mediterranean RT from Venice, Italy in April 1979. My second cruise was on the Amrikanis, a 7 day Caribbean RT from San Juan, Puerto Rico in March 1980.

A good Trivia question might be: when was Skeet Shooting banned from cruise ships?

The least I can do is reciprocate and post the only photos I have. The attached photos were taken by the ship’s photographer. Until last year, when I joined the digital age, all my pictures are 35mm slides and when scanned to high resolution, because the images are so small, the results, when the images are expanded to the maximum size CC allows, are not acceptable IMHO.

This is what I get when I post in the middle of the night, a triple post and I totally for got yor request for Trans-Atlantic tales and photos! Click on the links below and they will take you to my 2006 Seabourn Legend westbound and 2007 Seabourn Pride eastbound Trans-Atlantic travelogues while the final link takes you to my cruise slideshows (click on the Start Slideshow button — the slideshow will run continuously until you close the window).

Enjoy the armchair voyage. However, being there and experiencing the crossing real-time and in 3D is arguably the second best cruising experience after a World Cruise. ;)

OMG I am not sure where I found this thread, but I am glad I did. I went on the S.S. Amerikanis in the 80's, I think it was the 80's. I remember going to the Bahamas and this was like a huge ship to me. When I look back at it, I wonder how I thought this was such a big ship. Well, that's cause I have gone on 7 cruises and this of course was the smallest. The one thing that I will always remember about this ship is the desserts !Oh my I gained 10 pds that cruise. I still gain, but I try to walk a little not to gain so much. I have a photo album of this cruise and I have the same pics as some of these and it just brings back the wonderful memories. I am leaving this Friday to go on an Alaskan cruise, so I am really excited about that. Well, thanks for all the wonderful memories. Janice :)

I sailed her in 1987 - to Bermuda. We had to leave early due to a tropical storm. I remember our porthole looked like a washing machine window!

I was with my 3 best friends. We were between 20 and 23 years old!!! What a blast we had! August 1987...I think it was the 4th???

I have some pictures, I have to scan them to post them, but I will post them! I LOVE your pictures CruiseDivaNJ!

Hopefully I'll find the time to post them this week. I'm packing for my Explorer of the Seas cruise for 8/17! It's my first cruise since Amerikanis 20 years ago!!!! My DH and kids and I are soooo excited!!!

Some of the things I remember most about this cruise:

We were invited to sit at the Captain's table on Captain's night! We were all so honored, excited and NERVOUS! I have a photo somewhere of all of us! Wish I knew where to find it!

One of the captains (Greek - didn't speak English) took a liking to me and I remember moonlight walks on deck -(Very quiet because he didn't speak english) and I got to sit in the first row with him at the show! (he was cute!)

Our blow dryers kept blowing the circuit breakers, so our room steward had us plug in our dryers in a closet in the hallway. We were standing in bathrobes drying our hair in the hall!!!

The ship had a terrible list the entire trip! It was difficult navigating the narrow hallways because it was tilted so bad!

The food and service were INCREDIBLE!!!

Our "Singleworld" tour group was mistakenly 35 and OVER and the group looked like the cast from the movie Cocoon! We loved them all though!

"2-dollar pina colada's" on deck! I have a photo of my friend sitting in her lounge chair holding up two one dollar bills!

My dear friend Alyne crashing a moped into a police car in Bermuda!

The amazing Midnight Buffet!

And the funniest thing of all - The last night, my friends were too busy having the time of their lives to pack their bags and put them outside the door - so me, being the OLDEST of the group (Mother Hen) packed everyone's belongings. Well, the next day, we got up and dressed for breakfast and disembarking... No one had shoes but me! I packed everyone's shoes!!! They had to disembark sans shoes and went without shoes the entire limo ride home! They still yell at me for that! LOL!

I'll post pictures ASAP!

Thanks again for sharing your pics CruiseDivaNJ! My favorite is your photo of the Purser's Lobby. My most vivid first memory of the Amerikanis was when I embarked the ship through the Purser's Lobby from the right in your pic and the first thing I saw was the TV screen behind the purser's desk. It was an interesting and futuristic design even back in 1980 when I sailed on her.

Also, I have never ceased to be amazed at the hours of work put in by the galley staff in their detailed and intricate fruit and vegetable carvings for those elaborate buffets. Works of culinary art! Alas, one of the perks of sailing, for the most part, curtailed in support of the "bottom line."

Laura I cant wait to see your pictures!! Ive never seen anyone else's pics from Amerikanis. I didnt post the pictures of me in the nurses station getting a shot b/c I was SO seasick! I have to go look at the date we sailed, maybe it was August 4th- DH's Birthday....might have been the same sail!
