1 Night Cruise to Nowhere - questions!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience on this short sailing out of New York. My sister and I live in NY/CT and would love to do this on June 17th.

How is the one night structured? How early can you board the ship?

Any other info that anyone can share would be greatly appreciated!!

Kat:)

I am doing this cruise on the SPIRIT. I dont know anything about how it is set up, but I dont care!! I hear it is just like any other night on a typical cruise, but there are a bit more activities and 2000 people trying to do everything.

I plan on getting there early.

You are doing the same one that my sister and I are thinking of doing. She's been on a 7 night with her husband and I've never cruised before (overnight anyways, i did a day trip to the bahamas once from Ft. Lauderdale). My husband and I are taking our kids on a Disney cruise in October so that should be exciting.

I'm sure it will be fun either way!

I will be using this cruise as a "scouting" venture since I will be on the Spirit in July for an 8 day cruise.

My last cruise to nowhere was about 10 years ago and there was plenty of drinking, gambling and fun. My wife and I had a great time although it rained from start to finish!!

I did the 1-nighter on the Spirit in Nov. I think we boarded around noontime. I think you can board just like any other cruise. It is true that they try to pack as much into the 24 hours you are on the ship as they can. It is impossible to do everything. I wanted to see what the Spirit was like to see if I would want to book a longer cruise on her.

Last October we did the two-night Spirit cruise to nowhere out of San Francisco. The ship had come out of drydock about a week early and they used the time to do a one-nighter and then a two-nighter, before heading north to Vancouver and then back south and around to reposition in NYC.

The boarding was the same as always. They confiscated all wine and other liquor they found in carry-ons as passengers boarded - looked like there was quite a bit, and also took checked-on bags with alcohol in them to the art auction area for passengers to pick up later (minus their bottles - we heard quite a few people complaining about that).

We made a reservation at the steakhouse for the first night - food was good, but not that much better than what we had in the regular dining room the following evening.

Buffet was packed all the time. Entertainment was fine (Second City), and the casino was hopping both nights.

The ship is beautiful. We had a great time - even though it was definitely short. It was fun, but not really like going on a real cruise ...

There will be a group of 8 of us taking this 1-night cruise. DONGORDON, we are also on a "scouting venture" to check out the ship. We'll be cruising in early July with a large group and hope that the ship will live up to our expectations!! Fingers crossed!!!

However, I can't help out with any suggestions, as I've never cruised for only 1 night. It should be interesting!

I think we will all have a great time!

Christie,

Were you disappointed in the Spirit after the one-night cruise?

It looks as though you cruised on other ships instead after that cruise.

Cruisinkat,

It is fun with a group....the one-nighter will just be the Mrs. and I for a "romantic get-away."

In July, it will be with my three married daughters, their husbands and my 13 year old daughter and her friend.

This is my 2nd time trying to type this. I'll make this one quick.

Last year we took the Spirit 1 nighter in November.

We splurged for a $99 inside cabin. It was fine (after all how much time would we be spending in the cabin, not much).I'm not sure what they are asking for this years one nighters out of NY. I don't think we'll see the $99 a person or even close. I'll bet they double the prices. I'm not sure if I'd jump at the one nighter if the cheaper fares were more than $150 though.

We were on board, bag in cabin, made reservation for Le Bistro and eating lunch by 12:30. We had a nice lunch in Windows. After that we just roamed the ship and checked everything out. It is a very nice ship. I liked the Dawn a bit more (probably because we were on the DAWN for 7 nights and also the Dawn is newer). But I do NOT want one to think the Spirit was not nice. I will also say that after leaving and thinking about it, I wished I could have spent a bit more time on the Spirit.

The bars, casino, lounges and restaurants were pretty crowded at night. People were trying to fit in 7 nights into 1 night (not really but you get the idea).

I'd have to say it was definitely like a night out on the town with good food, drink, people, entertainment etc.

If you can get a good fare, you really will have a blast.

It was a great way to check out the ship without having to book the longer cruise.

I hope this helps someone.

DisneyforLife, my husband and I and friends are doing the one-night Dawn cruise on May 6th. Though we've cruised before, this is our first one-nighter and our first for NCL. This was a Christmas present to my husband (and to me!)

We're from Norwalk too - you're probably my neighbor and don't know it.

Can't wait for cruise as this will be my first vacation this year (even if it IS one day).

Ha! Small world!!

I am actually looking into this cruise for my sister and I as we never went away together, the two of us without our kids. She is from upstate NY so we could get to it perfectly. Hopefully it will work out for us. We are about 9 days out from our BIG family vacation in Orlando ... animal kingdom, magic kingdom, sea world, discovery cove, typoon lagoon and much more ... we SO need this vacation!!

hope to chat with you again soon!

Wow! 99.00 for two days? I got an inside for one night for about 250.00 each!! Damn.

When I was on the Dawn 1 nighter in Oct. They did a cabin drop with the $99 Latitudes promotion for the Spirit in Nov. Let me tell you I did not pay $99 for the Dawn but on the other hand I did get to spend 1 night in the Garden Villa:)

There is a link to the thread with my comments/review of the one day cruise below.

Hi Intrepid,

Yeah that $99 was a wow, but when I called NCL for the next 3 or so 1 day dinner dance cruises this year, on either Spirit or Dawn, the prices had doubled per person.

btw- I really think the reason for the great promotion was that the Spirit was just getting into service here in NYC and they probably wanted word of mouth about the ship. It was a great deal and a real great time.

Do not plan on sleeping much! Get there early too!

Dongordon- I wasn't disappointed with the Spirit. If I had to choose between the Dawn and the Spirit, I would pick the Dawn. The Dawn has a few more options that the Spirit doesn't. I like to take longer cruises and I would miss those things if I were on the Spirit. I thought the Spirit was a beautiful ship and would be fine for an 8-night cruise or less. I would choose the Dawn for a 10 or 11-night cruise, though. I think that if I had more time on the Spirit, I might feel differently. It is hard to have an opinion after 24 hours. After a few days, I might have had a different opinion. Now, if the price were right and I liked the itinerary better, then I would choose the Spirit over the Dawn. It would just depend.

I went on the overnight on the Dawn in October, the Spirit in November and will be going on the Dawn and Spirit in May & June. We arrived at the pier around 11 and were able to get right onboard. We went to our cabin, unpacked and went upstairs to the buffet for lunch. I had been on the Dawn before but it was the first time on the Spirit. I thought the Spirit was such a beautiful ship with many Asian details. Of the two ships, I believe I prefer the Spirit. If you don't have a balcony cabin I would recommend going up to Galaxy of the Stars and grab a window seat to watch the sailaway out of the harbor. Cagney's was wonderful for dinner. I am really looking forward to doing it again. I am also sailing on the Spirit on July 22 to the Virgin Islands and Bermuda.
