Formal Night-Hats Shorts Tshirts

Recommended Posts

We sat with an interesting family for dinner. We had a great time during the week. I never thought I would care about what people wore to formal night but this went a little to far. The Dad had a sport coat and open shirt which was fine. But the 3 kids ages 18, 15, 13 and had Tshirts shorts and the 13 year old wore a hat backwards during all dinners including both formal nights. He took off the had once to show his hair. I did not say a word but the hat should have come off. The Dad a "professional" lawyer did not say a word.

We had an enjoyable 6 nights talking. I did have a 17 year old and a 15 year that dressed for the nights at dinner. Just wanted to say I guess anything goes for the formal nights. I will also say our table got many stares during dinner.

Disgusting, isn't it?

Although we did not sit with this individual, they got up and walked out of the dining room, one evening a few months ago. They were dressed in "Punk Leather" with some sort of leather beanie and a cigarette (not lit) hanging out of their mouth. I kind of wonder if they were asked to leave, since I did not see them re-enter the dining room.

I had to sit at dinner with someone like that on a cruise before. Unfortunately it was my ex-FIL. He wore old ratty T-Shirts, cut off jean shorts, ball cap and tennis shoes to dinner every night and made really loud racial slurs about the wait staff. He also complained constantly about everything and everyone. Normally, I wouldn't care what other people do, but that showed me that I guess I do care a little bit.

I almost went broke slipping our waiter $20.00's and appologies. :(

These are excellent examples of when you should request a table change! I guess we've been lucky--have always had great tablemates--(our last cruise, I would have sworn we had Rodney Dangerfield at the table!!!) Dinner is usually my favorite time of the day--but if I had to sit with disrespectful folks....

Now I understand why people are so passionate about the dress code. This situation is the extreme.

I always argue the point that if you are well put together it doesn't matter what material your pants are made of. (jeans or silk)

This is an example of people who just don't give a hoot.

There are stunning jean outfits and then there are people who are clearly out of line.

I'm a 'live and let live' sort but this kind of story frustrates. Peoples dress influences their behavior and the ambiance of the evening for all. The formal night has the potential to be amazingly special - almost to the point of feeling as I've been transported to another place and time (almost like a faerie tale). Playing in the casino it can feel like a scene from a James Bond movie. Not to mention how much more romantic finding a quiet place on the deck is when you and you're significant other are dressed to the nines. I'm willing to wager the rate of "making whoopee" is much greater on formal nights than the others.

Anyone who doesn't even make an effort at dressing up on these nights are selfishly ruining my illusions and bringing me back to reality. (and reality bites)

aebalc: WOW well said.... I too feel that other people have an influence on the ambience of the evening for all..... I think this is why Royal Caribbean keeps their formal evenings..... and if you don't want to partake - there are other options.... why ruin it for everyone?

threeofus: Yes this is the extreme but unfortunatley what is a "stunning jean outfit" to some is not formal wear or even smart casual therefore it makes sense to just not encourage jeans in the main dining room.

Thought they enforced that rule for everyone. I've seen them enforce the no tank top rule even for lunch in DR. I usually don't care what other do, but if they were at my table it would probably bug me, since I've never let my 12 year old wear shorts (even when younger) in the DR and make him take his cap off when and wherever he eats. He would probably give me a hard time if he saw other kids not complying.

Its funny you should say that about your kids because I bet since you've brought them up this way.....their comments would be what my kids said.

" They should have at least taken their hats off and wore pants".

Oh I forgot to mention the Flip Flops....
