txaggiemom Posted April 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 18, 2006 We will be doing an Alaska land/cruise in late July on the Zuiderdam. The first ten days will be a land tour where meals are not included. We have the option of buying a land meal "package" that provides 14 of our meals, most of which are breakfast. Has anybody tried this plan and was it worth the cost? Was the food good and was there a choice of restaurants? Haven't purchased the package yet and would love to hear what others experienced. I understand that meals can be quite pricey in Alaska, even rivaling Hawaii for costs. Cost is not really a factor for us, but thought this might simplify our trip a little. Thanks in advance. Budget Queen Posted April 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2006 The meal packages significantly limit your dining choices since you can only go to certain resturants. I have never heard any raves about the meal packages.
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 18, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 18, 2006 The breakfasts are for the restaurant where you are staying - no choice. Same thing with dinner. We prefer to dine when and where we want to. Since you know what cities you will be staying in, go the Alaskan board and post each city - someone may have suggestions for restaurants in that area. JLT Posted April 19, 2006 #4 Share Posted April 19, 2006 When we took an Alaskan Cruisetour in 2002 we did not purchase the meal plan and were very glad that we did not. As stated, you are limited in where you can eat, sometimes you don't feel like eating a big meal, sometimes you want to join friends to eat, and sometimes you just want to get away from the people you've been sitting on the bus with for days. In Tok, I remembering hiking down the highway to a restaurant that I had read about, and having a great time talking to residents about their town. txaggiemom Posted April 20, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted April 20, 2006 Thanks for input. I think the meal plan may not be such a good idea now. Anyone else tried it? I certainly don't want to be restricted to where I eat and what.
