Vancouver - Downtown Construction

FYI - The following was posted on the Alaska forum by a poster who lives in Vancouver. If you are going to Vancouver just be prepared.

I don't think I'd personally want to stay this year at the Rennaisance Harbour / Pan Pacific or anything too close to Canada Place, as the constant noise from the pile driving (new convention centre/pier etc...being built for the upcoming 2010 Olympics) would really get on my nerves. There are going to be some mighty unhappy campers staying in some expensive hotel accomodations.

Does anyone else have information regarding this issue?

Thanks.

We stayed in that neighborhood 5-04, after repositioning up to Vancouver on Sun Princess, and there was a lot of preparation for new construction going on then - but not much pile driving.

That would be a bit much.Think I would look for another neighborhood.

The pile-driving occured mostly last year, and seems to have stopped now.

There is still a good amount of construction going on, as the new Convention Centre for the 2010 Olympics is being built just across from Canada Place, but the noise should be minimal, and of course, wouldn't occur at night.

We stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront last month. It is directly across

from the Cruise Ship Centre. It was not noisy at all. Might be a good idea

to ask for an east facing room at any of the these hotels, though.

You lose the view of Stanley Park/Lions Gate Bridge but still have view of

the harbour. The hotels are well insulated against noise. It is more

likely you would be disturbed by other guests than construction, especially

as noted above that it doesn't go on at night.

I've heard that the pile-driving starts up early morning though...like 7:30am IIRC. There were several complaints on TripAdvisor.com about this... while apparently (some) people chose to change rooms to get away from noise.
