tbenson81 Posted May 23, 2006 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2006 I tried using mappoint and mapquest to see the drive from Anchorage to Whittier and both take me 300 miles around in a big circle. They take me north on 1 , then south on 4 and then across the marine highway. There has to be a quicker way. IF you go south on 1 (seward highway) to portage - you are pretty close to whittier but there arent any roads on these maps -just train tracks that lead from portage to whittier. Can someone help me find the best way? Thanks Tony
alaskancruzr Posted May 23, 2006 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2006 There is a road that turns off toward Portage and then goes on to Whittier. You will have to wait to get through the tunnel to Whittier as it is used alternately by vehicles and trains. This is the link to the tunnel schedule http://www.dot.state.ak.us/creg/whittiertunnel/index.shtml. The drive to Portage will probably take you about an hour during the summer - or longer if you stop for wildlife viewing, photos, etc.

Budget Queen Posted May 24, 2006 #4 Share Posted May 24, 2006 You get to Whittier via the Seward Highway, about 60 miles from Anchorage, allow 1 hour 15 min. plus tunnel time. Only 2 one way car rental options, Avis and Harley's. Several shuttle options, listings http://www.anchorage.net , and the Alaska RR.
