We will be salmon fishing in Juneau in late July on a tour through the ship. Any tips or recommendations on the best way to process and ship the salmon back. Any information on who to use and the expected costs would be appreaciated.

Thanks,

John

The Captain of your tour will arrange processing and shipping. Below is the website of the processor we use in Homer EVERY year to give you an idea of the rates. FedEX shipping is NOT cheap. Processing (vacuum pack, filet, freeze) all over Alaska is about $.90 to $1.10 per pound. The weight basis is the entire fish that is brought in the processing plant. If the Captain will do it (most will), have it cleaned and filleted. Will save you about 10-15 cents per pound in processing charges. Last week, we brought home (on the plane) over 300 pounds of fish-halibut, 2 king salmon, and 5 sockeyes. Processing bill was about $570.00 at CoalPoint and extra luggage charges were $80.00. Much cheaper to bring it home as luggage if you have the opportunity.

With a ship tour, your fish will be processed and shipped via them. You won't have the time nor the transportation to be hauling your fish around for private processing. Expect to pay $100 and up for at least 20 lbs.

They are excellent with their shipping and have the day you want to receive it known in advance.
