Gdynia Port

Just wondering if cabs are readily available at the port for transport into Gdansk or short tours instead of having to rely on ship excursions. Anyone had good luck with these?

We took the Ship's shuttle bus into town. . .

On the bus there were nice Polish kids, who spoke perfect English, and directed us to the train station in Gdynia, where we took the commuter train into Gdansk. Very easy, and only cost 1 Euro. . . Just be careful you write down the name of the station----there are a number of stations that begin with Gdynia . . we didn't realize that, so it was a hit-and-miss coming back. Thank God we picked the right one.

Going: stay on the train until you come to the last Gdansk station.

Very easy--- we got to the Old city BEFORE the ship's tours.

We also took the train to Gdansk but had a much different experience. We had trouble finding someone who spoke English who could direct us to the train station. We should have obtained detailed directions in advance onboard. Then my sister-in-law was detained by military police for taking a photo of a building. (There was a sign on the building with a camera with an "X" on it, but she didn't notice the sign.) That was a terrifying experience as the military had guns and didn't speak English. She was released after about 30 minutes, but she was very shaken up. At the train station, we found someone who spoke English who helped us find the ATM to get the local currency that was required, and then helped us find the correct train platform. The train was in very poor shape, but only cost about $1.00 each way. I agree that you should write down the station information, as it is very confusing. I am glad we took the train because it was an adventure to remember, but it is not for everyone.
