We were only there the night before our cruise, but found plenty to do. We ate with some of the people from our roll call group at Bubba Gumps then strolled around. There was live music, a mall type area with shops and some open air shops. A very pleasant way to spend some time.

I really like Bayside Marketplace. We go there every time we cruise out of Miami. It has such a wonderful festive atmosphere. Really gets you in cruise mode. Check out Bubba Gumps or the Hard Rock Cafe. There are plenty of shops as well as a big sidewalk area with outdoor shops on both sides. They have live music going on with people dancing too. You will enjoy spending a precruise afternoon there.

This doesn't so much help the folks getting in late, but if you find yourself in that neck of the woods during daylight hours, I would definitely advise a trip on the metromover, the free elevated train. There is a station about a block from Bayside Marketplace.

The Brickell loop has some amazing views of Miami, especially going over the river. My mother-in-law can't walk as much as she used to, but we did the metrorail and metromover around town, and she enjoyed it very much.

I'm sure it is pretty at night as well, I am just lest confident about safety running around Miami on foot alone:)

We ate at Bubba Gumps about 3:00 in the afternoon. Went back to Hooter's around 10:00 and Bubba's was still open. We stayed at the Riande (sp), right across the street from Bayside, but I would never do that again, LOL.

how late is it open? We are at the Holiday Inn that night, sept 2, but won't get there until about 8PM, but we all want to go to Bubba Gumps.

Ya gotta watch Forrest Gump (the movie) a couple times before going in order to be acceptably proficient in Gump-isms and trivia. Best idea? YOU watch the movie privately, your fellow diners at the restaurant will think you are genius.

How many times do you get the chance for others to think you are a genius?...I know I sure don't very often!

It's really fun, there's quite a mix of people milling around down there. At night the place really hops...live music outside, all the fruity daquiri vendors. Looked like lots of little shops (we were there after all but the restaurants and bars had closed down), tour/excursion boats, "party" boats, I think there was a casino boat as well.

Don't mean to "rain" on anyone's "parade", but I honestly did not care for Bubba Gumps. I'm not a picky eater and the food just was not good, IMO. We, however, did eat at the Hard Rock, and it was surprisingly reasonable and we had GREAT service, food and drinks. There are a ton of other restaurants to choose from as well, check out the link to the Bayside website posted above. It was an AWESOME way to kick off our vacation.

As a born in B'Klyn and living in CT (a hop, skip and a train away from NYC) I have eaten in the chain places many a time but we ate at Hard Rock in Bayside one Pre-Cruise evening as we were meeting people from the Cruise Critic Roll Call Thread. I had a blast! There is a great place just outside and across the walk from Hard Rock which plays salsa music and serves up great "mexican style" mixed drinks in the later hours. Just what we needed to get in the cruise mood!

There is quite a bit to do in Bayside....many restaurants, bars and shopping opportunities if you want.

It was definetly a great place to go pre-cruise as the atmosphere was very similar to the cruise experience.

You definetly need to go to Bayside if you get the chance. The last time we sailed out of Miami we stayed at the Holiday Inn across the street and we spent a lot of time at Bayside. There are several restaurants and several retail stores as well. We were there in December and they had a Christmas Festival set up in the park that not too far from Bayside. We had a great time. Next time we sail out of Miami, we will definitely hang out at Bayside.

If you can, skip Bayside and go to Calle Oche, Coral Gables or Coconut Grove. Bayside is about as much to do with Miami as Taco Bell is Mexican food.

It is entertaining and fun if you only have a couple of hours but it is a crime to miss any of the exciting vibrant parts of what true Miami is about.

we hit bayside after our cruise last september. There is like a food court in the mall to your right as you look out into the bay. There is a guy there with parriots and that was fun to hold one. On that side you also have the hard rock. As you come into the mall from the parking or cab drop off is bubba gump. We did the rock..you have to get a miami HR shirt! The mall portion to your left has a record store and a luggage store incase you need one LOL! Lots of jewlery stores and little boutiques it is really nice. We had rooms at the Holiday inn but instead chose to stay in South Beach for the same price! DON'T! They look really neato on the websites but the WhiteLaw is not a 4 star hotel! Maybe in its hayday...but I didn't get a bit of sleep the boom boom from the lobby kept me up most of the night. But if you want to go to the beach it is only one block away and across the street from some great shops and places to eat. Miami beach is Dirty. looks of liter but I did come back with 4 shells.
