Packing a Tripod

I want to get some long exposure evening pictures of the ship and wondered if you guys pack your tripod on your cruise or if it's just going too far. I was disappointed with how my night pix turned out on my last cruise.

I carry a compact tripod in my bags all the time.

Keep in mind that the ship is moving, so if you are trying to shoot stars or lights off the ship, a tripod will not help you much.

 

If you are shooting on board photos, you might want to consider a GorillaPod. I love mine!

Taking a tripod is not necessary but it does come in handy. The down side is that you may hear, "Can you use that to take our picture before dinner?";)

That thing is great! It looks extremely portable.

I carry a little Velbon Ultra Maxi which is now discontinued. The Ultra Maxi S, which is still available is even smaller. Folds to 12" and extends to 50". Only weighs about 1½ lbs. too.

 

Sturdy enough to hold my Maxxum 7D for this shot:

 

A 2 sec. exposure taken a bit before dawn.

 

 

I don't use all that much, but when I need it, it sure is handy!

Splinter, THANK YOU so much for posting this. I saw the Gorillapod online months ago and couldn't find it again! I went out and bought one today!
