bjbinfla Posted August 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2006 We will be on the Crown to Bermuda Aug. 27th. Just wondering...since we will be overnight in each port & evening excursions are offered, do they still have the usual shows/activities on board in the evening? We are thinking of doing some of the shore activities, and while we hate missing the ship entertainment, parties, etc., we also don't want to stay on the ship & not have anything to do. For those of you who have already been on this cruise, what is the ship nightlife like, especially when you are overnight in port? Also, how many formal nights are there on this cruise....the usual 2 since it is a 7-nighter?? Thanks!!

The only thing closed the entire time while in port is the Casino. The night excursions are wonderful and I would choose any one of them. Hamilton is the best shopping port and on Wednesday nights they have a street festival that we look foward to every year. Enjoy, Bermuda is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. They have about the same entertainment on the ship when in port but no Casino. There is only ONE optional formal night on the cruise. Otherwise its resort casual and you can wear resort casual on formal night if you want. About 1/2 the people dress up to some extent...and don't miss the Dine around program to have one meal ashore...
Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 15, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2006 There are actually two formal nights, but because hardly anyone gets dressed up for the second one, nobody realizes it. The first formal night is Monday, Lobster dinner, the second formal night is Friday night. (At least it was on the 7/09 sailing) We dressed for formal night because we wanted a formal family portrait taken. There is no formal Captain's Cocktail Party on the Crown. My parents, who have taken at least 20 traditional cruises, were very disappointed, they even wrote that on their comment card. My husband and I, on the other hand, didn't care. On every cruise we've taken where there's been a captain's cocktail party, it was simply a vehicle to allow the ship's photographer to take a picture of everyone with the captain in the hope that a lot of people would buy them. You had to enter the party through a specific entrance, the cruise director would ask your name and then mispronounce it while introducing you to the captain, who would immediately turn you to face the camera, which would immediately take your picture, and then you'd be hustled right off to get a diluted drink. Frankly, we always felt insulted by the whole process. If NCL has stopped doing it on all cruises, I'm delighted. Like the old parade of the baked Alaskas and the unwarranted mandatory formal nights, it's a tradition best abandoned.

The Captain from the Crown remembers me...and frankly I don't remember the second formal night, It wasn't on anything I saw.

The Captain from the Crown remembers me...and frankly I don't remember the second formal night, It wasn't on anything I saw. 1. The captain's cocktail party to which Got2Cruise refers is, I believe, not the much smaller, invitation-only VIP reception for suite passengers and others deemed worthy of special stroking, but the supposedly grand, mob scene-like festouche that typically precedes a ship's first formal dinner, where all passengers can (and seemingly do) attend. Because of this, it's typically held in the ship's big theater, and a limited selection of drinks (usually wine, cheap champagne, and some kind of spiked punch) are pre-mixed and served by waiters carrying trays. On one non-NCL cruise they had set up a picture-taking opportunity at a spot where the long line of passengers waiting for the climactic introduction to the captain would have to pass: a photo taken in front of a false backdrop of the Titanic staircase. As I said, it's largely about the money, and very difficult to pull off with freestyle dining, where passengers' dining times are not regimented by the cruise line. 2. KeystoneCruiser Posted August 15, 2006 #8 Share Posted August 15, 2006 All formal nights on all NCL ships are OPTIONAL. Only about 40% of the passengers will dress up for the first one and even less for the second one. The 40% includes everything from tuxes to shirt/tie. Most people just wear resort casual. (polo shirt and dockers/kahkis)

I'm delighted that the captain of the Crown remembers you. Many cruisers enjoy the party, it is a traditional. Believe me, by parents never purchase the picture with the captain, and they still enjoy the party. It is a social event, a reason to get out of your cabin. It is nice to meet the Cptain, to see who actually in charge of the ship. On the Crown, we never saw the Captain once. Even the night in which all the crew members go on stage, the Captain didn't bother. We had a joke that there really wasn't a Captain on the ship, it was like that movie where they drag that dead guy around. I don't think it would be difficult to have a Captain's Party with freestyle at all. Simply make the party around 10 p.m. after a show. The passengers who would like to meet the Captain, and have a toast together would come, those not interested would go their separate ways. To get back to my original statement, there was NO Captain's Welcome Party for ordinary passengers on the Crown for all passengers. A special party for people in the Apartments does not count.
