A lot of talk about clothing

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of talk about dressing for formal nights and in restaurants, but what about just daily wear around the ship to the pool, etc. Is it fine to walk with your swimsuit and coverup and flip flops? Shorts and tshirts? Or is it a more dressy atmosphere during the day? ALso, at night after dinner, do people go back and put on their shorts to sit by the pool, etc, or on formal nights do people stay dressed formally the entire evening?

I've read so much advice about not overpacking and keep your packing simple.

Yes people do just have thier shorts on after dinner also. You wont see many but some will (one being me)and walking around the deck or in the shows. Not many will be around the outdoor pools at night that I have seen, but more around the indoor pools at night. Formal nights will have more people staying dressy. There is no rule on anyone having to stay like they are after dinner. Cover-ups with the swimsuit in the day is fine but not in the sit down main dinning room, the Windjammer has a few come in that way but make sure it is a true cover-up not a "see what I have on under" cover-up. You also have food by the pool that you can get on most ships. There you may stay as is and pick up the food and sit around the pool to eat. Works nice for those who want to sit in the sun the full day.

These are not "rules" by any means. You can do as you want and I am sure others will have something to say on it soon also.

Have Fun and Enjoy Yourself-----this is a vacation.

Shorts and t shirts are fine in the dining room at lunch and breakfast time.

A cover up and flip flops are the norm in the Windjammer.

As for staying dressed up after your formal dinner, you will hear a lot of debate on that issue. Some do, some dont. I decide that by what I will be doing after dinner. If I am seeing a show or going to a lounge, yes I will stay dressed up for the evening. If I am sitting out on deck, taking a late night swim, roaming the promenade or talking a walk on deck, I will change into something more comfortable.

I always change clothes after formal night dinner because I just am not a formal kind of girl, er, woman. I see lots of people still dressed up, but then I see lots of people who are not. I'd say it's been half and half on my cruises. Do what you enjoy!

Mostly DH and I stay dressed. Our last cruise we didn't, you know I don't remember why, I just remember us making it a point to run back to our cabin and change. One reason that comes to mind is we may have been going to the casino. You know people smoke there and a couple of times afterwards my good clothes smelled of smoke.

During the day I'm always in a bathing suit with a nice cover-up, I have quite a few of them. I usually take two to three bathing suits and about 5 cover-ups for each cruise. The funny thing is I usually take a pair of shorts and blouse for each day and Iusually only wear half of them.

Oh well I am after all on vacation!

Lets see, to try really hard not to get into an ugly debate, I'll state my answer this way: I get quite excited about my cruising...(I'm here a whole year early) so yes, I plan, shop, pack and repack, and enjoy putting together the "perfect outfits". I take the whole cruising experiance seriously in a fun way. (if that makes sense)

I wear a cover up to the pool and anywhere else that I may be traveling that day. I only sport the bathing suit AT the pool. My parents always taught me to dress apropriately wherever I am. So enroute to the pool I'm at least covered up.

In the public area's including lunch, I wear traditional clothing, not cover ups! I will if it is commonly acceptable wear shorts.

For the evening I follow the dress code, that asks us to dress formal on formal nights and smart casual on smart casual nights. Many people feel that because it's their vacation to, they don't have to. And they don't! They don't ruin our time. We look great, and they are there on their vacation. I have only noticed one or two that don't dress up. So although the debate goes on, I don't really see to much of it.

A good time is had by all:D

I think cruising and vacation in general is a time to relax and enjoy of course. But for me it's also to enjoy the finer things in life like, great food, room service, a housekeeper, a gorgeous vessel, dessert, and dressing up. My hubby doesn't love it the way I do, but he is pretty proud of how he looks as well as I keep him in the nines too!

Enjoy

The atmosphere onboard is very casual during the day. I agree, take more bathing suits and coverups and leave half the shorts at home. If you pack your most comfortable shoes, you will be very happy. Even on ship days, you will find that you are walking a lot, those cute sandals that only go with one outfit will probably stay in the closet all week.

We wear shorts and T's (or I wear sundresses a lot) to the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Bathing suts and cover ups are not allowed in the dining room, so it depends on what you are doing and where you plan to eat. We'll go to our cabin and clean up for lunch, it's worth it (to us) to not have to eat at the buffet or grill by the pool.

We change after dinner because we like to go up on deck. If we see the show or go to a lounge before then, we'll stay in our dinner clothes.

Most days its shorts and polo or even a T-shirt or Hawaiian shirt...its all depends on what mood hits. We only wear bathing suits at the pool or the spa. On cooler days I wear either zip off pants or jeans. Best rule of thumb is dress for the activities that you tend to do during that day.

For the evening we also follow the dress code. We love the formal nights and all of us to dress up to celebrate these events. Most nights however its khakis and collared shirt de jour and DW favors casual dresses over pants because they are cooler in those stuffy dinning rooms. Remember, the food taste the same no matter what you wear.

I guess you could say that we tend to favor the luxury side of cruising when dining and during evening events, but the adventure side during the day and shore excursions. Dress appropriately for each is just one of dynamics of cruising and for us, part of the fun.
