P&O scuttles schoolies cruises

By Mike Smith

October 10, 2006 03:00am

Article from: h14_dailytelegraph.gif</IMG>

P&O Cruises is to axe its controversial schoolies cruises, despite the rush for cabins on this summer's program.

In the wake of the death of Dianne Brimble on board one of its ships and growing concern among parents the company is to cancel the three school leavers' cruises scheduled for late 2007.

But this summer's sold-out cruises aboard Pacific Sun will go ahead.

Managing director Gavin Smith said the move followed a decision by the company to stop offering age-specific holidays.

"P&O Cruises' passengers range from 12-month-olds to more than 90 years of age, with an average adult age of 47 years," he said."We want to cater for this diversity year-round."

Mr Smith said the company wanted to develop growth through the traditional, broad customer base.

"School leaver and other age-dedicated cruises are not where we see our business developing," he said. "Accordingly, we will no longer offer cruises dedicated to a specific age bracket."

P&O Cruises will apologise to school leavers already booked on the 2007 cruises for any inconvenience caused by the decision.

Mr Smith said P&O Cruises would operate its scheduled 2006 school leavers' cruises in November and December, which are fully booked.

He added that this year's school leavers' cruises would be subject to heightened security measures including additional security officers, CCTV cameras and the implementation of the company's new excessive behaviour policy.

Passengers engaging in inappropriate behaviour will be disembarked at the next port of call.

Good. :D

Schoolies cruises are a major turn-off.

I realise not everyone on a schoolies cruise is an idiot, but I'm afraid the vast majority tend to be there for sex, alcohol, drugs....I sure wouldnt want my child going on one...and I think P&O have made the right decision in letting them go in an effort to clean up their image.

A further article on www.news.com.au on the cancellation of the schoolies cruises can be found here http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20556445-421,00.html. The main comment is that this is a PR exercise by P&O. Some key comments:

P&O Cruises' cancellation of specialist voyages for schoolies has been branded a public relations exercise rather than an ethical decision.

The former husband of Diane Brimble and a Sydney social worker both questioned the motives of P&O's move to scrap schoolies cruises from next year.

Mr Mapstone said the company moved because "the brand of P&O is in such bad shape".

"If they're serious about separating the brand from schoolies and if they acknowledge that their brand can't handle more front page controversies, then why aren't they cancelling this year's schoolies cruises?

"Schoolies is just a bad mix with a corporate brand because things go on, you can't put it next to a corporate brand and hope to come out alive."

Chaz:)

well, because if they did, they would have many many angry people that wouldnt have an option for schoolies now if they did. Pretty much every place on the gold coast that will take schoolies was booked out by the start of the year. So if P&O cancelled my cruise, i would be expecting them to organise alternative accomodation for me.

Thank goodness they didnt cancel this years ones. And they should know that not every school leaver is just chasing sex and booze. But it is because the ones that are will be flocking to the coast that i decided on a cruise.

p&o are pretty smart not offering schoolies cruises but at the end of the day the kids will just book next year, whats the big deal these kids are only doing what their parents did 20/30 years ago on fairstar. ive been on 10 cruises and whilst i agree they can go a bit crazy generally they are well behaved. from a p&o view it makes more sense to target the 40 year olds as they spend more cash on board, cant imagine a schoolie kid going to an art auction

Right on. "Schoolies" has become too commercialised these days, but there is nothing to stop a group of friends getting together and going on a cruise, and having a good time in an adult envoironment.

Isn't that what schoolies is all about?

And yes, schoolies has become something that i couldnt really be bothered dealing with, so i am avoiding the coasts (both of them) and working most of the week so i have more spending money on the cruise.

only five weeks left of school (including two weeks of exams)

We bought a Goddard on Pacific Sun, and we had money aside to buy one on Pacific Star - but they didn't have one we liked on that cruise, so we've just got the one.

I am pleased for you StarMan that they didn't cancel the schoolies cruises this year!! And pretty cool that you get to go on one the last ones ;) It must be coming up pretty soon if my memory is correct???

Starman's not doing one of the offical schoolies cruises on Pacific Sun out of Sydney though, he's just going on one of the normal cruises out of Brisbane.

Thats true, but everyone who talks to me about it talks like it is, it was easy for me to get a bit confused.

When i booked, my TA gave us the option of doing one of these cruises but it just didnt appeal to us. The reason we were doing the cruise was to get away from the crazy druken youths, not to spend a week crammed on a ship with them (that and we couldnt afford the airfare to sydney).

Also for anyone interested, here is Michael Godard's web site:

take care now,

This the one we brought.... It hangs on our loungeroom wall and as well as looking good - it's a reminder of our wonderful cruise on Pacific Sun.

I am actually dissapointed that they have cancelled the schoolies cruise, there are alot of schoolies whom arent 18 yet, and i see the cruise alot after option than being at surfers or any other city. I was on the 2002 schoolies cruise and had the time of my life. I wasnt 18, nor were a few of my friends, others their parents didnt want 'roaming the streets'. I never saw any violence of any sort nor anything i wouldnt see anywhere else, there was PLENTY of security and people who did the wrong thing were taken to the lower level rooms for the rest of the night. Im sure there were plenty of "sex drugs and achohol" on board but it was nothing more than you would see at your local club, it wasnt as public as everyone seems to think.

I think the staff actually enjoyed having people of their own age and younger to socialise with.

Out of intrest roughly how much was micheal godards work?

The one we brought cost us approx A$400, including delivery and seller's comission. It took about 8 weeks to be delivered as we brought the last one of that particular print, so it was sent back to the United States to be reframed and reglassed before delivery back to us in Brisbane. In fact, we'd booked our next cruise before the painting had been delivered to us!

Ours is a serio-lithograph. He does 3 styles serio-lithograph, and 2 more which I can't remember the names of now. The serio-lithographs are the cheapest option of the 3 options (and the smallest in size).

There were several we would have like to by on our most recent cruise but they were the bigger ones that were both too expensive, and too big for the wall space we had available.

The "Cruise Martini" one is the one I really like but I got the impression from his website that it was one he did just for the cruise ships and I thought that meant for the ship's decoration not for selling. We (hubby & I) also liked the NASCAR one (can't remember exactly what it was called but you probably know which one I mean).

Just had a look at the site. Love the work. I've had a quick look at the auction pieces when we were on the Sky in March but didn't see anything like these. (it was a quick look). I actually thought they'd be more for the "oldies" (not that I'm 20 lol).

I shall definately be going and having a look at the work properly this time.

Hopefully there'll be some of Godards work available.

I love the cruise martini.

Also isn't Godard a piece of art himself (all those tats) lol.
