New York City: Gallagher's Steak House

I've been to Gallagher's a couple of times and have always had a good meal and good service. (These have been group luncheons, and suggested by someone who works in Midtown.) For steakhouses in the Times Square area, I've always enjoyed Frankie and Johnnie's on 45th Street. It may not work for you if you don't like dining in close quarters that can be noisy, especially pre-theater (think "speakeasy" atmosphere), but the steaks are very good - and last time I was there, the bar staff remembered me and brought me a complimentary scotch:D .

Hi All,

WOW, can't believe no one mentioned THEE best Restaurant for Steaks besides other great food.

Cityhall Restaurant

131 Duane Street

Between West Broadway & Church

http://www.cityhallnewyork.com/index2.htm

With no one mentioning this one, I will alway get a reservation with a problem.

We also go to Peter Lugers but only once a year. TOO EXPENSIVE for frequent visits. CityHall is not the case.

Try It......You'll Like It.

From what one of the waiters told me... the owner of MJ's steakhouse was involved with Peter Lugars at one point... (I think one of the chef's)...

So... the menu from Peter Lugars to MJ's is virtually identical...

But, from what I hear... the decor is nicer at MJ's (I've not been to Peter Lugars...) .... plus... you don't have to venture into Brooklyn....

we don't want you anyway...(Brooklyn that is)...

spoken like a true Staten Islander---most of whom are refugees from Brooklyn....couldn't take it.

Lugar's is the best but difficult to get to. All the mentioned places are pricey. Never much liked Gallhager's. If you can get in, Spark's is good. Also just had a great meal and Quality Meat on 58th Street last week. I'd pass on Uncle Jack's and Frankie and Johnnie (not sure it is still open as they are demoing the block). Of the chains like Ruth's Criss etc., I thin Del Frisco is the best. Have a look at this site for all kinds of info. http://menupages.com/

Our company hauls a lot of the prime beef to NYC for the upscale steakhouses.

The BEST prime beef comes from the Excel/Monfort/Cargill packing companies. The best butchers in NYC are Milton Abeles in Mineola and Strassburger Meats in the little West 14th St. Market.

Sparks buys from Strassburger, Peter Luger's buys from Abeles. Gallagher's buys from both (although more from Strassburger). All the meat comes from the same packing companies AND often rides on the same truck.

New restaurant (April 2006)-Quality Meats-58th St. is featuring Abeles special cuts. Even Gus (general manager-retired-Strassburger) states Quality Meats is the "to die" for steakhouse in NYC. Plan on $100.00+ per person-steak, side, appetizer and drink. Enjoy!!!

We ate at Gallaghers several years ago. We bought airline tickets that included the hotel and a dinner there. The food was good and the waiters were very attentive. A lot can change over the years, but it was good then. :D

We ate at the Gallaghers in the NY NY Casino in Vegas. It was spectacular. Dinner was over 5 bills but well worth. Loved the surf and turf especially how they shell the lobster tableside, no mess, no fuss. ;)
