sellie Posted November 5, 2006 #79 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Power cuts have struck several countries in western Europe, leaving millions of people without electricity. Power companies said the outage started in Germany (Cologne) with a surge in demand prompted by cold weather, and then spread to other parts of Europe. We are living near Cologne but fortunately weren't effected. This happened just when the Pearl started to leave. The extreme current fluctuation caused that EON couldn't shut down the power lines over the river Ems to guarantee a save underride for the Pearl. "Der neue Starttermin ist für Montag ca. 16:00 Uhr geplant." They'll try it again on monday at 4 pm. What a waste of 4 aggrevating years with a really mean teacher! Thanks everyone for posting the info and keeping us informed. I cant wait to sail in March! electricron Posted November 5, 2006 #82 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Thanks for the news. It's good news in a way, because it isn't the Pearl's fault. I hope they restore power quickly. Having a power outage isn't fun.

Cruisin' Nana Posted November 5, 2006 #84 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Good Morning, All! Thank goodness the Pearl is O.K.! I will be checking on her anticipated departure along with everyone else tomorrow. I am SO excited for everyone who is going to be on her for the Transatlantic trip (and jealous too!) and know your trip will be awesome! Can't wait for the pictures! I keep thinking about how totally incredible it would be to stand on the bank of the River Ems and watch her go by! It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it! The same feeling I have when I think about how cool it would be to see the Northern Lights. Don't get to see them in Texas, you know! But I WILL see them one day!!!! Now, let's pull up that anchor and get underway! Happy Day!!!
fxrescbe Posted November 5, 2006 #85 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Current news actually is, that the transfer of the Norwegian Pearl caused power outages all across Europe. They had to cut a main power line over the river the pearl was supposed to go on. Due to unknown reasons this caused a domino effect that cut power in many parts of Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and even in Africa (Marocco). People got trapped in elevators, lights went off, traffic lights went out of function and hospitals and airports had to run on emergency power. sellie Posted November 5, 2006 #86 Share Posted November 5, 2006 The new time schedule for tomorrow is online: 4 :00 pm Meyer Werft 4:30 pm Passage Dockschleuse (watergate) 7:00 pm Friesenbridge (Weener) 9:00 pm Jann-Berghausbridge (Leer) 1:00 am Sperrwerk (River barrier Gandersum) ... if the weather conditions are okay and if they don't have any problems with the power lines. All the german newspapers report about the Pearl causing the european blackout. It all started at 9:30 pm when the power provider shut down the power line over the Ems. cksmom Posted November 5, 2006 #87 Share Posted November 5, 2006 Just saw an article on the verizon home page- it stated: A private Germany company, E.On AG, said the problems began in northwestern Germany, where its network became overloaded, possibly because it shut down a high-voltage transmission line over the Ems River to let a ship pass safely. OOPS!
cksmom Posted November 5, 2006 #88 Share Posted November 5, 2006 OK- I am so technologically incompetent that it took me 10 minutes to try to copy and paste that small bit of info and someone else beat me to the punch!!!!:o
fxrescbe Posted November 5, 2006 #89 Share Posted November 5, 2006 This might sound funny, but actually is a true story just making the news here: The transfer of the Norwegian Pearl last night has caused a massive power outage all across Europe. The incident has been the worst in the last 30 years. To transfer the Pearl from the building place (sitting far inland) down the Ems river to the sea, not only bridges had to be removed but also a main 380.000 kilovolt power line had to be switched off. This unexpectedly caused a domino effect that resulted in wide power fluctuations in many countries power grids. Computers then decided to cut power to a large number of consumers to prevent a total blackdown. This affected Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and even Marocco (Africa). Total duration was 30 minutes. They then switched on the line there again which in fact cancelled Pearls transit, but at least restored people to Europe. Exact causes are not known right now, as well as it is not clear when they will make a new attempt for the Pearl. Given the results of the first one, I doubt it will be today. Globaliser Posted November 5, 2006 #95 Share Posted November 5, 2006
They could transist the river either way, forwards or backwards. It really depends upon the people doing it, which way they prefer.
Going backwards has become the conventional method for Meyer Werft's cruise ships. One of the critical factors in the transit is the depth of water underneath the keel. The transfers are now aided by the Ems barrier, which is shut at high tide for these transits when the maximum amount of water has been accumulated in the river. (This has caused subsidy arguments, as there was little reason to build the barrier at public expense, other than to support this single shipyard's activities.) Even so, I believe that at some points there is as little as 9 inches of free water underneath the keel. If a podded ship travels backwards down the river, the screws basically shovel water underneath the ship as they work, thus slightly increasing the depth of free water underneath the keel for a little more safety margin. EileenN Posted November 6, 2006 #100 Share Posted November 6, 2006 In Germany tonight the route the Pearl had to take to get out to sea, seems to have caused a huge power outage in Europe as power lines were disturbed to allow passage of the ship. On the late news in California, this was reported with videos. Seems to have caused a very big inconvenience. Not a great start...hope things go smoother for her.
