okay here it is folks the rookie at sea is being put on the boat, my wife the travel agent says we will cruise for this years vacation but me the guy who want to veg out and not do a thing is a little leary. I like to fly and have done so with uncle sam in his air force for many years and can get from these little island jaunts in a few hrs but being on a boat for 2-3 days with 3200 folks I just cannot get into this. my parents have cruised for many years and enjoy it but with me being this biggest couch potatoe since al bundy and archie bunker i need some convincing that this is for me ????? yeah sure you eat all week but when you have to pay for sodas and drinks and their is no grocery store for miles and you are at the mercy of the ship doesnt one think that hey this may not be what it's all cracked up to be ?? we having a family saying since we are in the travel business my wife a travel agent and my father in-law works for southwest airlines in the resv dept that you get what you get its like being at 35,000 ft on southwest all they have is drinks and peanuts but eventually the plane has to land and get gas, a boat can float forever. Now I hope you can get where i am coming from. so come on and tell me that is this big boat fun and exciting when I could have gone to a all-inclusive resort and been wined and dined by the local natives ???

so with the cruise being paid for and we have about 100 days til we go i must face that this is myvacation for the year and I can only dream that the cubs make the world series and i can look forward to spring training in az in march !!!!

all replies would be appreciated

Have you seen the Disney cruise commercial where the wife and kids are running all over the place doing various activities while the father is asleep by the pool, asleep on a beach, asleep on the massage table, etc. The nice thing about a cruise is that you can be as active as you want or as lazy as you want.

I say go for it!!!! You will never know unless you do it. Go with an open mind and experience all that cruising has to offer. One of the perks of cruising is you can do as much as you want or nothing at all. You can do your thing and your DW can do hers, if that is what you choose. My family and I do a lot of things together, but will separate sometimes, because my DH likes to just relax or go to the casino and make his donation to the cruise line. :D I like to sit by the pool and listen to the music, people watch, and watch those fun pool activities (men's sexy legs contest, ect.). Most importantly, I like the option of a floating hotel and getting to visit a lot of different places that I could not do at an all inclusive. Trust me you will be wined, dined and pampered like a king!!! Another option for you may be cabin selection. What type of cabin did you choose? You may benefit by choosing at least a cabin with a balcony. This way when you wanted to be completely alone and relax you could go sit on your balcony and watch the beautiful ocean go by. Yes, these cabins cost a lot more, but maybe it would be worth it for you. Now, about the grocery store, you will have a wide selection of food choices. My DH and DS are very picky eaters and they love the food on a cruise and never have trouble finding anything they like. They are the steak and potatoes type of eaters - nothing fancy or exotic!!! Hope you enjoy your cruise - I really believe that you will.

Happy Sailing,
Sports Mama

You say you want an "all-inclusive," but are you aware of the price difference between cruising and all-inclusive land vacations? It's pretty big! You can treat your cruise as though it were an all-inclusive... drink all you want... rent watersports at the beaches during your port visits... and you'll still wind up spending less on your cruise, but you'll have everything you want! So go for it. :) And believe me, you'll be "wined and dined" plenty on a cruise-- it's about the most pampered I've ever felt.

I had gone on a cruise as a child (12) and loved it. When it was time to plan my honeymoon, I suggested a cruise to my husband, who wasn't too keen on the idea, but agreed to an Alaskan cruise. The first day or so, he still wasn't too sure, but by the end of the cruise, he decided he loved cruising. In fact, he now claims it is really the best way to take a vacation.

We cruised the following two summers (Bermuda and New England/Canada) and were on a hiatus for a few years due to the birth of our child. Next week, we return to cruising with our 2 year old in tow.

I hope you have a wonderful time and that you return a cruise enthusiast.

Think you may want to try a smaller ship, and an all inclusive on at that.
Seabourn (my favorite) or Sea Dream Yacht Club could be perfect. And with your wife being a Travel Agent I am sure she can get a good deal on it.

Seabourn and Sea Dream all-inclusive including liquor. No tipping allowed.

Only extras shore excursions and Spa treatments.

Hope this helps!!!:)

I would respectfully disagree with mcboo on this issue. For someone who equates himself with Al Bundy and Archie Bunker, and someone who says he's a couch potato, I don't think the super expensive, fancy and formal Seabourn is the best advice. Now, I'm not at all disrespecting the original poster, but if he's a couch potato and is hesitant to cruise at all, why direct him to one of the most expensive cruises in the business?

Now, scammers, are you afraid the ship will run out of food because there are no grocery stores at sea? I think your travel agent wife would have told you that no cruise ship ever runs out of food, and no passenger ever goes hungry. Plus, on the big ships, there are stores where you can go and purchase lots of snacks if the cruise line food isn't enough for you. Then you have all the stores on the islands. Not sure what you mean by saying you get what you get, but the food on the cruise ship is varied and plentiful, and the menu changes every day, so you won't be bored.

All I can say is go for it. My hubby wasn't too thrilled at the thought of our first cruise many years ago, but we're up to over 40 cruises now and it's the only way he wants to travel.

Cruising is NOT for everyone. I do know its for me. I can do it all...or I can do nothing. I wait until you come back and let us know if it is for you and how much longer before you book another.

When I was married my husband said no to cruising-- for the reasons..he'd be bored...its too expensive....its too crowded.... blah blah blah.

The man died at the age of 42 never having experinced what it really is like.
Life is too short to not try it out anyways.
