cruiser53 Posted November 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2006 Hi, Was wondering if any of you could recommend a nice hotel in Amsterdam. My partner and I will be there next spring and wanted something close to everything but nothing to elaborate, something intermediate. Thanks in advance for your help. ab0si Posted November 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 20, 2006 Amsterdam is a compact city. Everything a visitor is going to want to see/do is close. Also, the public transportation system (metro, bus, trolly) is simple and efficient. Basically, in my opinion, you do not need to worry too much about where you stay as far as access to "the action" goes. I have no idea what you mean by intermediate. Does that mean 50 euro/night? 400? Are you looking for a charming little inn or B&B (there are some great B&Bs there and I am not generally a B&B fan)? Something modern? Are you willing to trade a bit of "fancy" for a canal view to keep things in your price range? Paul
cruiser53 Posted November 20, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted November 20, 2006 Im looking to spend about 200-300 Euros per night. Not looking for a B&B, more like a mainstream hotel. View is not essential. Thanks for your help. Regards Tony
judyzoo Posted November 20, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 20, 2006 We enjoyed the Canal House many years ago. I know it was still in business a year or two ago (and hopefully still is), so they must be doing something right. It’s probably more like a B&B than really mainstream, but it was very enjoyable and had nice atmosphere. Reasonably priced, also.
kannna Posted November 20, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 20, 2006 We stayed at the Ambassade in September. Lovely hotel. Nice roomy room, big bathroom, canal view, in a quieter spot of town but we could walk everywhere. The people at the desk were incredibly nice & helpful. It was a splurge for us but is in your pricerange. We would stay there again definately. K
Rare taxatty Posted November 21, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 21, 2006 I very highly recommend the 4* Hotel Toren--near the Anne Frank House in a very nice area with good restaurants, and a 10-15 minute walk from Dam Square and the tram lines. Very nice A/C'ed rooms, good breakfast and pleasant service. Les
ab0si Posted November 21, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 21, 2006 For 300 euro yoou have many good choices. For something a little different, take a look at Banks Mansion. People seem to love it and hate it. I love it. For "mainstream" I think the Intercontental is as good as it gets. For a bit of romance, the Estherea is excellent. My wife's favorite is Hotel Pulitzer. She usually is right, but in this case, hse is wrong. For an old fashioned canal house experience, the Estherea is better. :) Paul

elin Posted November 24, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 24, 2006 Thank you all so much for all the great information, I will look into all of them and make a decision. Tony Hi Tony, Was in Amsterdam for a girl's weekend in May. We stayed at the NH Barbizon. Great location, walking distance from the train station (Central Station, which we used to get to and from Schiphol airport). It is walking distance to everything (and very close to the red light district, which we used daily as our short cut to and from Dam Square). Amsterdam is very walkable. Would highly recommend the hotel and the price is within your budget. Enjoy! Elin
Rare Hlitner Posted November 25, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 25, 2006 We will be in Amsterdam in late April (our 4th trip to this city) and decided to book through Priceline in order to avoid the high cost of decent hotels. We were able to get the Marriott Amsterdam for a bid of $122 per night. This is a very good hotel in a good location, so I guess we lucked-out. Hank Hank--I've never done P.line and am afraid re: getting a good hotel for such a low price. Did u know u were getting the Marriott? It's like $300 per night when I want to go... nancycara Posted November 29, 2006 #13 Share Posted November 29, 2006 We used Priceline for our July post cruise stay and got the Movenpick for $135/night. If you check off city center and only go with 4 or 5 star you will be pretty safe. Even 3 star is probably OK if you don"t care about A/C. We did 5 star and then 4 star as a second bid chance and started bidding at around $100. We used 2 different accounts so we didn't wait the 24 hours all the time. Rare Hlitner Posted November 30, 2006 #14 Share Posted November 30, 2006 Priceline is always a bit of a gamble, but you can get good information by first checking on their "sister" web site called http://www.biddingfortravel.com. Since you are bidding on a category you are pretty well guaranteed not getting a dump. We have been to Amsterdam several times, and really had not preference on hotels. The prices on-line seemed a bit steep so we thought we would take a chance on bidding low for a 4 star. As to using Priceline, we have done this many times (domestic and international) and have never been disappointed. By using the biddingfortravel.com web site, you can get a good idea on what to bid and the hotel possibilities. Hank

bubbie617 Posted December 10, 2006 #16 Share Posted December 10, 2006 Ine & others: Thank you for all the information on hotels, but I need very basic information to start. Like, what part of the city should we look in? We would probably like to stay somewhere near the hop on-hop off bus which we would use to get an overview of the city the first day. Then we would have a better idea of where we will be going the rest of the time we are there. We would like to see museums, the Anne Frank House, the canals, etc. We are also open to suggestions. Our cruise ends in Amsterdam at the end of April and we plan to stay 3 nights. I don't need the world's most magnificent hotel, but it MUST be clean, probably air conditioned (what is the weather like at the end of April?) and there must be private bathrooms. Breakfast would be a nice perk. I don't want to save money at the expense of being in a dump. I appreciate any help you guys can give us. TIA

Many things are walking distance and there is excellent public transport. In April you will not need airco, temps are around 15C. Celsius in general and chance of some showers.Bring sweaters. Check the hotellist you gave above, there are various prices. Also the Toursit office list, gives many others. Remember April 30 is Queens birthday, the town will be crowded, one big party going on.... Also you might want to go to Keukenhof:http://www.keukenhof.nl/, since it will be tuliptime end of April. Take a train to haarlem and continue by bos or book a tour like: http://www.keytours.nl/

willy paul Posted December 11, 2006 #19 Share Posted December 11, 2006 a few years ago we stayed at the Barbizon Golden Tulip ( the name may have changed recently) opposite the Central Station. It was a very nice hotel, excellent breakfast included, reasonable ( not cheap) price and very convenient to getting around Amsterdam. If we went again we would stay there.
