Look I know i am going to get slammed by everyone on this board. But you have to understand something. I was so excited to be able to cruise out of PR Because I so wanted to see the culture and meet the people of PR. But after reading these message boards I got nervous over and over again I kept seeing loud rude pushy cutting in line people. Now I sailed only once and that was on the Voyager and had a great time. No pushy people seemed to get in my way, no loud people annoyed me. But as you said in this quote, If you dont like that, you have to choose another cruise. you said it yourself, thats why these people on these boards keep talking about it because like you said maybe we should take a different cruise. I am considering it. You see I dont like loud, lively and active as you stated. I like considerate people and loud is great at the right times but at certain times it is not. And I believe that is what is most annoying to people on these boards and that is what they are talking about. I dont like PR who are loud and pushy I dont like Americans who are loud and pushy I dont like teenagers who are loud and pushy and If I any way felt they would be the majority on the cruise I would not go which is why I am not on carnival to many loud pushy teenager, hence the family cruise on rccl. Please dont take it as predjudice against a culture Maybe it sort of is if like in the quote above she said PR tend to be very lively. I take that as loud not in so many words. I am going to try this cruise I hope everything I read is wrong, I am going to give it a try. Okay throw it all back at me Im ready.

I think I would base my decision to cruise on more then comments on an Internet messager board.

While all you comments are heplful and fun to read they are only one small part in deciding whre and when to cruise.

I am watching this thread with interest.

I have taken 2 cruises out of Puerto Rico. One with very nice people on it, and one with some unfriendly people. I enjoyed both, though I did not make friends on the second.

I have been on several cruises out of Florida. On three of those cruises I have encountered unfriendly and downright rude people.

On some of those cruises, the rude and unfriendly people were Hispanic. On some of those cruises, the rude and unfriendly people were non-Hispanic people. ON one cruise, the Jewel of the seas in 2005, which left out of Ft. Lauderdale, we were surrounded by a ship full of mostly older, non-Hispanic rude people for 8 LONG days. That one was so bad, that many of the staff were commenting on how terrible the crowd was that week.

On my last cruise on Enchantment of the Seas, I personally witnessed rude behavior from older white men.

In a nutshell, I don't think you can control whether your fellow passengers will be unfriendly and/or rude. I think it is luck of the draw, no matter where you sail from.

I'm not going to slam you.

I have read many of your posts expressing your anxiety over the prospect of sailing with Puerto Ricans that you think are "loud and pushy". You keep saying that.....over and over again. The bottom line is ths: there WILL be loud and pushy people on your cruise (there are some on every cruise). If this is something that REALLY is bothersome to you....maybe you should reconsider your cruise altogether???

I'm sorry to have to put it that way - but you keep repeating the same post and I can see that you are obviously distraught over the prospect of sailing with "loud/pushy" individuals.....

If you have been told in advance that folks from Puerto Rico are a "lively" bunch and that is still unacceptable to you.....then maybe you need to re-think??????

thanks for not slamming me and putting it very diplomatically. But as you can see In my post I have sailed on the Vogager and had the best vacation I have ever had. That being said you read all of the comments as well as I, and would you not feel this might be a issue on this particular ship? Had I read this before i booked it I most likely would have not booked this ship. But now that I am past the time of getting all of my money back I am hoping what has been said on the other threads is not true. I actually live in a very white class fairly wealthy town with an abundance of Jews. Alot of my friends happen to be PR that married Jewish men. Two of these families have children the same age as mine and my daughter is best friends with both of these girls from different families both have mothers that are PR. As a matter of fact one of the girls is going to visit her grandmother who lives a block down the street from the hotel we are staying at 2 days befor we sail, and we are all very excited they will be there at the same time because we happen to like the parents very much and it is exciting to see them in there homeland. So If you think I am predjudice, Im sorry, as they say ""some of my closet friends are PR." I just dont feel the need to be around extra rowdy pushy people. PR or Jewish or whatever.

I would like to know if it is true you can wait on the dock that day and get a cheap price. We are going on the Empress of the Seas for ll days. But we will be in P. R. for a month. Maybe I will go down and get in line and cruise on the AOS too. Anyone got the truth on this matter??

I hope you cant wait until the last second to get a cheap ticket after I just paid full price for my cabin. I know they want to sell all the cabins, but if RCI would do that, Id start asking for refunds. If they want to sell out all of their cabins, then lower the price for everyone. I was talking with a friend of mine this morning about this subject. She read on here someplace that if you come to the dock that day and their are cabins available, you can buy them for 1/3 of the price.

Truth or Fiction...????

Recently, I have noticed a lot of people worried about Puerto Ricans "taking over" the ship or whatever. What worries me is that people may become prejudice with this mindset.

Sorry for my rant, I just noticed more and more people hoping to not have a large amount of Puerto Ricans on their cruise ship.:(

Wonder if these are the same people who are worrying about what everybody else is wearing ... hhhmmm ....

sorry it was there

I won't comment on whether you can be perceived as prejudice or not - that is definitely not the kind of discussion that should be taking place on these boards.

You booked your cruise, apparently you can't get out of it now without suffering financial loss - so you will just have to deal with whatever and whoever comes your way....right?

Good Luck

I know at one time some cruise lines allowed this in many ports. I had heard of people doing it in Miami several years ago.

However, I thought now, for security reasons, they had to submit their passenger manifest within 72 hours of sailing? This would not allow for additional passengers to board on the day of sailing..

I would only add that when you meet "lively" and "loud" people, keep in mind it may have nothing to do with them being "incosiderate" and more to do with the culture in which they were raised. Certain cultures just are loud and lively, not only Puerto Ricans. While I totally get that this can be startling or off-putting for some people, it doesn't necessarily mean that a negative character assessment is in order. Someone who is being very quiet might just be a very incosiderate person indeed. It just depends.

Has anyone here ever sailed on Costa with a largely Eoropean/Italian group of passengers. Their culture and vacation preferences can also be quite a bit different from ours. I would never say any of the things about them that I have seen/heard on this board (and that includes a large number of men in Speedos and bikini bathing suits). There is also usually a large group of smokers on board who smoke all over the ship. This is their way of life, and if you want to experience a Costa cruise, then that is what you will get. I would never consider any of those cruisers rude or loud. It is just their way of life, and their culture. If anyone here has ever been to an Italian festival, you will know what I mean.

So much for loving thy fellow man... Flame Away!!!!

But, I do have a problem with the PR culture and its the way they allow their children to rum amok on cruise ships. If PR culture means not controlling your children, than I do have a problem with the culture. Allowing children to run all over the decks screaming and yelling, splash and annoy adults sitting near the pools while their parents ignore the rukas, etc etc. Cultural differences have little to do with good parenting.

Hank:

Bad parenting is NOT part of the Puertorican culture, quite the contrary. At least the way I was raised anyway. We were taught to respect our elders to the point of asking the parent/grandparent for his/her blessing when we arrived or left the house. And God forbid you ever sassed someone older than you or disobeyed them because you would get to know the business end of a "chancleta" (the big heavy sandals mamá wore :D)

If on your cruise you encountered parents who did not control their children, then they are BAD PARENTS, and as you clearly stated...culture has nothing to do with it.

I have friends who, like myself, spend time in PR in winter and do get last-

minute tickets on cruises. However, they are usually at least a week until

the sail date. If you are there, check the paper for travel ads or contact

a travel agency, as they handle the tickets. I have not heard of getting

tickets at the dock, but who knows, you could show up with luggage and

cash if you want to try.

I found the people in Puerto Rico to be very friendly.

Personally, if I book a cruise that sails out of San Juan I would expect a high amount of Puerto Ricans onboard. Likewise, if I sail out of Miami I expect there to be more people from Florida....

Absolutely!! Good parenting has little to do with what country you are from. Have you been to a mall lately? In my opinion, our country leaves much to be desired in our parenting skills. Unfortunately, misbehaving children are EVERYWHERE!

And, by the way, some of these posters need to study geography and history - the residents of Puerto Rico are USA citizens also and thus they are Americans just like you and me. And to drive that point home, on the flight we were on from Chicago to San Juan, it was announced that the body of a Puerto Rican sailor, who was killed in Iraq, was being escorted home for his funeral, and before we boarded, the Naval escort, who flew on the plane, led us all in a moment of silence. So lets get off the fact that they are not part of the USA.

I see and hear lots of prejudice coming from the people that say these things.

If you had really read my posts, you would have noticed that I am Cuban-American. I also happen to have several relatives of Cuban decent who lived in P.R. for the last 30+ years. No one ever insinuated that P.R. people are not loyal to the USA. You should not read between the lines and make assumptions about predjudice. I merely pointed out that Puerto Ricans have pride in their island culture. And many do not group themselves with mainland Americans. This does not make them unpatriotic. I have visited P.R. many, many times over the last 20 years and spoken with many about this subject. Can you say the same?

Cubans also use "chancletas". My mother used to chase me around the house with it. When she caught me, it HURT!

I can say the same and I find that most Puerto Ricans are proud to say they are American. You are the one who made the quotes "Duh, it is a different country," "They DO consider themselves seperate from the U.S." and "when asked if they are American, they would say no." Those statements are just not accurate.

I really should stop writing about this because I am the minority on here but............. there are many people still on the other threads who have been on many cruises and they are still writing on great experiences on all of the ships and great experience even on the Adventure but they are still having that one issue and it only seems to be on the Adventure and other ships that sail out of PR. My guess is it is not predjudice, it is just more then average annoyances then the other ships. If so many people are writing the same thing then something must be different and bothersome. Anyone can have a bad experience in other places with a very few, but not one after another after another.

Wow, my advice to you would be to do whatever it takes to switch your cruise. In reading all of your posts, my impression is that you seem bound and determined to discover that it's true that all cruises out of SJ are full of rude, pushy, loud Puerto Ricans. I think you create what you fear, so really any PR's on this cruise probably have no chance in your eyes. The first time something iffy happens, you will probably say, "Oh, I just knew it!" You will likely magnify every little event and before you know it, your whole cruise will be populated by loud, rude, pushy Puerto Ricans, while you probably won't notice the rude pushy mainlanders. Not a slam on you personally, it's just human nature that if one goes into any kind of situation with very strong expectations, it's almost impossible NOT to have your expectations met.
