Mikew0805 Posted December 27, 2006 #159 Share Posted December 27, 2006 I think people get the idea that there are two options: 1) Buy the unlimited soda card for $42 2) Never have a soda onboard Obviously, this isn't true. I really think that the best option for most people is to buy cans on an as-you-go-basis. The cans taste MUCH better than the poorly mixed fountain sodas, and they're twice as large. Personally, I'd like to see the cruise lines go with something like 20-sodas during the week, punch this card every time you get one, anyone can use it card. It'd take away the sharing problem. Of course, it won't happen as long as the majority of the people onboard are willing to pay $42. Just an FYI for you and everyone. While on the Splendour, at first they would put the coke in the small glasses. Then, we realized if we asked for specific glass we got it. The outside bars had the curvey glasses that you would put a pina colada in, and we would ask for those each time with no problem. In the show lounge and the casino, we would ask for the draft size glasses. They are really big, and while in the show lounge there was no need for the waiter/waitress to return to check on refills, as this would last the whole hour. However, in the casino there was such great service that the draft glass would barely be below half way, and the waiter was there changing it out for a new one. So if you are a soda drinker, ask for a different size glass. There is no rule stating it has to be in a specific glass, and the bartenders and waitstaff seem to not even think twice when asked. -Mike

hunnypot1 Posted December 27, 2006 #162 Share Posted December 27, 2006 Thank you for the tip about requesting the soda be put in a LARGE glass! During dinner, my DH probably drinks at least a liter of diet coke.
SheilaSailAway Posted December 27, 2006 #163 Share Posted December 27, 2006 This attitude is the reason there are laws, lol. hurricane sally---ummm, it's not an attitude, it's an opinion. (lol) thanks for your feedback sweetie pie. :) merion mom---thanks for whipping out that dictionary and giving us a lesson in word definiton, soooo helpful, per se. Bahahaha i enjoyed your opinion and your insight. FPP777.---what you have to understand is that my opinion IS varied to suit my own needs, it would not be MY opinion then!:p my point is that it is a small issue that gets so blown out of proportion it's ridiculous. also, i hear your opinion and respect it even if it comes off as slightly preachy (not a bad thing, just putting it out there) JMHO.:D people are gonna do what they need to do...i am too busy enjoying life to be a soda card cop. Hahahahaha c'mon that was funny! i, for one, do not bother with the soda card, it's not my thing...but for those of you that do use it...happy sharing/stealing/spreading the love!!!:D Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha have happy and safe sailings gang!!! beachchick Posted December 27, 2006 #164 Share Posted December 27, 2006 "LOL sorry it wasn't your husband? Your wife? Your brother? Your..ahem...sex slave? hee hee" Um, I think FitzLA means "partner" as in "life partner". I love Coke but have never bought the soda cards because: A) You can tell the bartenders are annoyed at having to constantly fill the glasses B) I don't want to carry around a mug (I know, sometimes it's just a sticker, but often it's tied to a huge mug too) C) Fountain pop is gross compared to bottles or cans D) On my August cruise, it was still only $1.74, with gratuity, for a can of Coke. Usually only splurge on one a day. Sure, there's a markup on the soda products. Fitz is probably right that it's probably about 10 cents a glass. But the same holds true for alcohol: at wholesale prices, you sell a drink or two, and the house has already paid for that bottle of booze, and the rest is profit. I do think it's wrong to falsely represent ones self by using someone else's card, but it doesn't tangle my knickers if someone is doing it! Regarding B: We've never had to carry the mug thing and show the sticker. We've always been able to just show the sticker and get our club soda in a plain old glass. Don't worry about having to carry the mug around with you. Regarding C: Absolutely agree as far as the sweetened/flavored sodas go, but the fountain club soda (our "water" drink of choice and just about all DH drinks throughout the day) had been very good on all RCI ships. For our one or two diet sodas, we simply bring on a few cans of what we prefer. RCI doesn't even stock the diet sodas I can drink, so I bring them. DH and I each get our own stickers. Sure it's more "expensive" that way. It's also the right thing to do. Our first cruise, DH bought a sticker and I didn't. He got me three club sodas during that cruise, and even with just a few, we felt kind of weird about it. (I will admit that I shared two club sodas with my sister on one cruise because she was mixing drinks in the cabin--back in the day when you could still buy a bottle onboard and pay the consumption fee--and had run out of club soda. I said, "Hey, mix me a drink too and I'll let you use my sodas as a mixer..." So, I know I'm far from perfect.) beachchick
tkportersat Posted December 27, 2006 #165 Share Posted December 27, 2006 I got a soda card on our last cruise. I never drink soda with dinner. Usually just water and wine. My partner did not get a card, but at dinner he always drinks soda. I showed my card to the waiter and asked if my partner could use it at dinner since I didn't and he brought him a coke every night without even batting an eye. At the pools and such, I would get one soda, and we would share it. Just like if I bought a soda at a restaurant and chose to share it with him. I never gave him my card to get a coke, unless he was getting a coke for me. I think this way of sharing is okay. I can choose to share my drinks with whoever I want. And long as we are only getting one at a time I think its okay. Enjoy! I agree, my son wanted a card last time - daughter did not. Twice at dinner she opted for a soda, and he showed his card for her. We didn't abuse it and constantly get her drinks, she mostly wanted tea and juice anyways. OP should do what they feel is right. I honestly think sodas should be included in the price of the cruise along with the food.
drrich2 Posted December 20, 2007 #166 Share Posted December 20, 2007 Scanning this thread brought to mind 2 ironies. One is for people to post that stating their opinion will change no one's mind, then do it anyway, sometimes at length. Can't help but wonder why, if that's what they believe. The other is a hole in the argument that people who share soda cards run up costs that are passed to 'honest' soda drinkers on board, raising the price of sodas. Like shop-lifters, basically. That's not proven, folks. Possible, but not in all practices. When my wife & I, both of whom in daily life drink quite a bit of Diet Coke, cruised 7 days on Adventure of the Seas, neither of us brought a soda card or drank any soda on board at all. RCI made no money on us. If one of us had bought a card & shared it, given how dirt cheap sodas actually are, they'd have made money on us. RCI is probably more concerned with generating profit than passengers minding ethics. If the pattern of my wife & myself were replicated with several thousand other cruisers, & RCI's board voted on which way they'd prefer we go (2 moderate soda drinkers share a card vs. no sodas period the whole cruise), I suspect they'd vote for us to share a card. bychance Posted December 20, 2007 #167 Share Posted December 20, 2007 Of course it´s your business as much as it´s it´s mine to state my opinion and I´ll keep doing that, if you like it or not. But obviously you don´t like it and fell a little p..... of by it.However in my opinion it doesn´t matter a bit if you spend $0 or $6.000.000 on that ship. In my opinion you can share as many cokes with your partner as you wish, as long paid individually for them. And yes I tell you I never bought a coke and shared them with anyone else! I don´t buy and drink that yukky stuff. However there´s a difference between buying a drink and share it or buy a "eat / drink all you can" deal and share it or buy a single drink / meal and share it. Again JMHO and YMMV obviously. Why get heated about it? We will never agree on this as you think it´s OK and I consider it theft. I don´t expect you or anybody else on this thread to be convinced by me, thus will keep voicing my opinion. I bought a drink card on our last cruise I don't drink coffee. I prefer cold caffienne! I shared my cokes. However I only like a drink or two of the sodas I got. I guess I should throw the rest away not to be a thief! Thank the heavens for CC. I will go to confession to save myself! I thought I was respectful of the law. I guess I was wrong:( . I will try harder on my next cruise! bychance

aqhacruiser Posted December 20, 2007 #169 Share Posted December 20, 2007 I always buy the soda card as I drink more then 3 a day so it's worth it for me. They do check the card everytime you get one and I've never had a problem getting a coke anywhere on the ship but some people have reported that they've had problems doing so. They do change the Coke cups and the color of stickers from time to time. In Oct. stickers were red and in Dec. they were white. Coke cups were different also. Your dining room waiter will know that only you have a Coke card so it's kind of hard to share one at least in dining room. If you drink more then 3 sodas a day it's worth the card and if not, just buy a can when you want to. On the EX. you can also find bottles of diet caffiene free Coke and other sodas in the Liquor store that you can buy in bottles. Soda card only for fountain sodas. You drink soda all week and it is expensive? EDIT: ahahahahaha..just realized that the thread is one year old. Who the heck brought that up and fooled me. RetireeWannabee Posted December 20, 2007 #172 Share Posted December 20, 2007 The thing that gets me is that SODA IS CHEAP! It's an item that gets marked up a huge amount everywhere. It would be nice if the soda card were a bit cheaper.
graf103 Posted December 20, 2007 #173 Share Posted December 20, 2007 For the soda card to worth it, you would have to drink more than 3 cokes a day... i like my coke, but not that much, so I'll just be buying them when I want them. what sort of bugs me about the soda container is that it never seems to get washed...or does it? Yuck.
watsor1 Posted December 20, 2007 #174 Share Posted December 20, 2007 BUT lets think about this, really $6 a day for soda... good god! . Think that's bad?
