Are the tips for the week based on per room or per person?

Yes, the tips are per person, per day and are around $10 per day, per person. The above metnioned tip calculator is a wonderful tool to use, even if you plan to add tips to your onboard account, you know what to budget :) .

I ask because the only time I've ever had a steward's assistant is the time I cruised Carnival. I'll never forget them. Antonio and Anthony. Quite a team and quite possibly the friendliest, sweetest crew members I've met on any ship.

We pre-tip too by having them added to our account upfront (RCI). Not really a tip given ahead of time, it just identifies the source of money for the gratuities on the last night. For those who provide even better service, we give a little extra. When you book (online anyway) you can 'check' the box that says you want to add gratuities up front.

Sorry. I didn't make myself clear. I have heard of prepaid tipping. I shouldn't have called it a pre-tip. What I never heard of was all the other people that MACOP mentioned as being added into the group of people being tipped.

 

Steward's Asst, Housekeeping Mgmt - that is the part I was talking about when I said "you're kidding!" And I still wonder if anyone has heard of this since I've never seen a steward's assistant on RCI. And I'm not sure why management would be getting a tip since they are salaried differently than those who aren't in management - at least that is my understanding.

the last two cruises we have pretipped with payment of cruise. My husband hates to have to carry extra cash and have to remember we have to do that at the end. He wanats to have a good time and forget.

I pre-pay my tips (and generally add extra cash to the envelopes). The tips go to cabin steward, head waiter, waiter, and assistant waiter. Never saw any extra surprises.

 

Was actually concerned on my last cruise, as I had pre-payed my tips before the cruise even started (when I booked), and switched tables the first night (from early to late seating). On the third nite, I mentioned this to my waitress, as I wanted to ensure that the transfer was made and figure out if there were any additional steps I needed to take. She said "you are on my list...thank you very much, Miss Tracy!". :) They've got that system DOWN! LOL

Perhaps she is talking about Celebrity? They do have an "Assistant Chief Housekeeper" on their list, at 75 cents pp/pd. And it's been a really long time since my last Celebrity cruise, but it seems that they may have mentioned that the cabin steward shared their tip with an assistant, but that position is not listed out by itself. Very old memory, so take it for what it's worth! :)

 

The tip calculator makes it very easy to compare all the different positions that are tipped from line to line, just click on the radio buttons, and the list is displayed for that line (or cabin category).

This is completely untrue!

 

If by "Matre D" you mean Head Waiter, then yes, when you pre-pay your tips you do tip the Head Waiter. It's a whopping 75 cents per person per day - the recommended amount. (I won't get into the whole debate about whether Head Waiters deserve tips or not but in our experience they have certainly earned at least the recommended amount.)

 

But there are no "surprise" tips for a steward's assistant or housekeeping management. Not on RCCL anyway.

We just got off the Monarch on 12/15, and the tips charged to your SeaPass account include what zotzer mentions above.

 

The Head Waiter is actually the supervisor for your dining section. He works primarily behind the scenes, so many people don't see much of him (or her).

If you charge your tips on Celebrity they do add the head waiter and assistant housekeeper and you cannot cancel them. Have not had this on RCI. I do prefer cash for them on the last night, just my choice. If you want it on your account just get it from the casino.

Brenda, no surprises regardless of how you choose to tip. Perhaps you are confusing your RCI cruises with Celebrity cruises. Whether you charge your tips to your account or not, there are NO TIPS suggested or added for Maitre'd, room steward's assistant, or housekeeping management. It is recommended that you tip the Head waiter for your section but it is a relatively minimal amount ($0.75 pp/per day). When you get your tips envelopes at the end of the cruise there are four envelopes (waiter, asst. waiter, headwaiter, and room steward). If you add your tips to your account that amount will be included in your tip total. If you choose to tip in cash, it is up to you as to who and how much you tip.

Again, the head waiter IS indeed included in the SeaPass account tipping.

 

Some ships do the voucher system, some don't. If they don't give you the vouchers to put in the envelopes when you add tips to your SeaPass account, you might not even know that the head waiter is included.

 

But, when you get the vouchers, there is one for the head waiter.

We have done the pre-paid or charged to our sea-pass tips. It is much easier and we get double points on our RCCL card. :D
